Behind the scenes

Franklin’s resident and ProTek owner Jeff Krause started painting houses during high school to earn a little pocket change and quickly realized that he had found something he loved doing. Before he knew it, he had paid his own way through college with the earnings from his new passion. From there, he went to work for Sherwin-Williams, and worked for them for 25 years in different cities throughout the South before eventually calling Franklin home. As part of Sherwin-Williams, he learned all the aspects of the paint industry including technique, professionalism and customer service. “Coming from a professional company, I learned to deal with customers in a very professional manner,” said Jeff. He also found a friend and would-be business partner in Ivan Porto-Siurano, who is bilingual. Ivan had been with Sherwin-Williams for several years himself as a sales representative and a store manager. He spent those years working with builders, property managers, and owners and assisting with color and product selection and design advice. Together, Jeff and co-owner Ivan have 30 years of experience under their belts.

Free advice

+ Find a painter who sticks to promises and deadlines. This is the biggest thing that will quickly set painting companies apart. Many paint contractors will make big promises on the front end that they can’t necessarily keep. If your house painter follows through with consistent, clear promises and communication, then you’ve found a great company. Find out what the policies are if they don’t work within their promised deadlines as well. This will be important for you to know.

+ Find a painter who responds and communicates quickly. How long does it take your painter to respond back to your calls? Do they give you an option to communicate over email as well? When something goes wrong or plans change, what is their method of alerting and informing their customers? Make sure your painting company communicates quickly, and that you can trust what they say.

+ Find a painter that is licensed and insured. It's an absolute must-have. Having the appropriate insurance and paperwork in place will help legally protect you, and your property throughout the process.
