Country Rocking

Vegas native Sierra Black shining bright in life and on stage

For Sierra Black, country music has always been a part of life, from the time she was a little girl growing up in Las Vegas.

"I am the baby in my family of five and I remember my dad picking up his guitar and singing country music to us every night," said Sierra. "When I was 16, I looked at my parents and told them I wanted to pursue music. It's my passion and what I was born to do."

The 31-year-old singer and songwriter has since made that childhood dream come true. Drawing her inspiration from her favorite artists like Faith Hill and Shania Twain, Sierra began traveling back and forth as a teen between Nashville and Las Vegas, learning everything she could about the country music world.

"Everything about country music just resonated with me," said Sierra. “It's the connection and the meaning behind the words."

In 2017, Sierra wrote and recorded a song titled "Make it Easy" with multi-Grammy-winning producer, Mark Bright who has worked with artists like Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Rascal Flatts. That song went viral on YouTube garnering nearly 7 million views and more than 3 million streams online.

"It's a ballad I wrote with Mark Bright and Chris Stevens,” Sierra recalled. “I love when people send me videos of the song playing at their wedding. It's about love and finding ‘your person’ who just makes life easy."

But like the stories behind many country music songs, life is not always easy, and heartbreaks are inevitable.

"When I got separated and divorced, that really sparked a lot of writing creativity," said Sierra. "I know if my daughters need anything, it's the best version of me, and the best version of me is a singer. So, I dove right back into singing and songwriting and never looked back."

Sierra said while it's not always easy balancing her life as a mom to her girls, now 5 and 3, with her busy career, she feels she's in the place she's meant to be.

"I feel like I am in my prime. It's amazing," said Sierra. "I am not sure if it's being a mom or getting a little older, but I am truly in the best phase of my life."

The road ahead for this talented singer-songwriter is now looking brighter than ever. Last year was a special year for her from scoring a residency at Ole' Red Las Vegas to performing before a record crowd of more than 60,000 football fans at Allegiant Stadium. Sierra also recently released her latest single, “Green Lights,” with more on the horizon.

When asked about the secret to her success, Sierra said it all comes down to knowing who you are and writing your own story and, in her case, also her own music.

"Everyone wants to put you in their mold or box and tell you what they think you should be," said Sierra. “That’s never going to work. No one else will believe that. Be authentic and true to yourself. That's what will bring you success."

I feel like I am in my prime. It's amazing.
