Every family has a story worth celebrating! This hands-on craft invites children to explore what makes their family special through photos, drawings, and colorful decorations. Younger children may need a helping hand, while older kiddos can let their creativity lead the way. Divided into four meaningful sections of Family, Roots, Traditions, and Thankfulness, each crest becomes a one-of-a-kind keepsake.
Materials
Poster board or cardstock
Family photographs (that are ok to glue and/or cut)
Colored or scrapbook paper
Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
Scissors
Glue
Stickers, Washi tape, and other decorations as desired (pom-poms, ribbons, glitter, etc.)
Step 1: Create Your Crest
Cut a shield shape from your poster board or cardstock. Divide it into four sections using markers, decorative tape, or paper strips. Label each section “Family,” “Roots,” “Traditions,” and “Thankfulness,” or leave them unlabeled for more creative freedom. Add a banner displaying your family’s name.
Step 2: Tell Your Story
Add photos, drawings, or names of your loved ones (pets too!).
Step 3: Explore Your Roots
Add representations of hometowns, flags, maps, or symbols representing your heritage.
Step 4: Celebrate Your Traditions
Think about what your family loves doing together—annual vacations, holiday celebrations, favorite recipes, or weekend adventures. Bring those memories to life through illustrations, photos, or words.
Step 5: Count Your Blessings
Think about the people, places, and little things you’re thankful for. Whether it’s grandparents, pets, friendships, or favorite activities, express your gratitude through words, drawings, photos, or stickers.
Step 6: Make It Yours
Add your favorite decorations! Let your creativity shine and make your crest uniquely yours. Display your family’s masterpiece somewhere special and revisit it in the years to come as your family’s story continues.
