Creating an Oasis

“I think every woman should take time to sit in the prettiest place in her home,” states interior designer Karen Korn, owner of Karen Korn Interiors. “A formal living room can serve as a beautiful retreat.” In the absence of a formal living room, Karen suggests that virtually any room can be transformed into an oasis. “In my design practice, I love to play on symmetry, balance, color, and pattern to create enough tension to be interesting, but tranquil at the same time.” Creating ambiance can be as easy as changing a light bulb (see Bright Idea on the opposite page). Karen believes creating your haven begins with finding simple ways to add feminine touches that offer a sense of soft comfort, simple contemplation, and self-connection. “With thoughtful interior design, you can feel the calm of any space,” notes Karen.

Bedroom

A bedroom is a perfect escape. Add a variety of different textures like cotton, wool, fringe, or linen. A linen headboard, cotton sheets, patterned waffle coverlet, and alpaca fiber pillow cover are inspirational touches.

Living Room

Surrounding a chair, a lamp, or drapery with fresh flowers or real plants makes any space feel like an oasis. Bringing something in from the outside provides that sense of peace and calm.

Bath Room

Private space is essential to our health. A bathroom is a perfect place to relax, read, and, most importantly, close the door. Fill this serene space with essential oils and shut your eyes.

Kitchen

Don’t think of being in the kitchen as a chore. Consider the intentional movement as a form of meditation when preparing a meal, chopping the vegetables, and bringing everyone together.
