As the Owner of You Can Fly Travels, LLC—a Disney Earmarked travel agency specializing in Disney destinations, cruises, all-inclusive resorts, Europe and custom curated vacations—Kim Thompson knows a thing or two about planning a Disney trip people will treasure for a lifetime.
When asked what families should consider while planning their summer vacation, Thompson shared her knowledge to help families experience the magic they’ve dreamt of without breaking the bank.
What are some of the most overlooked ways families can save a bit of money—or get way more value—without cutting out the magic?
“One of the biggest misconceptions is that saving money means sacrificing the experience, and that really is not the case. Timing can make a huge difference. Traveling during slightly lower demand weeks can often save families thousands while still giving them amazing weather and experiences.
“We also encourage families to focus on value instead of trying to do every single add on. Sometimes staying at the right Disney resort with included perks gives more value than overspending on upgrades that may not matter to their family.”
What’s your advice to keep the fun and leave the overwhelm of trying to do everything behind?
“The biggest advice we give families is this—you do not have to do everything to have an incredible Disney vacation.
“Some of the best trips are the ones where families slow down enough to actually enjoy each other. Disney can absolutely feel overwhelming if you go into it thinking every attraction, restaurant and experience has to happen in one trip.”
What is your golden rule for pacing a Disney day so that everyone—from toddlers to grandparents—stays happy, hydrated, and smiling?
“Build in breaks before you think you need them.
“That one simple shift changes everything. Disney days are long, hot and overstimulating, especially for little ones and grandparents. We always recommend families take a midday reset, whether that is going back to the resort, having a relaxed sit-down meal or just spending time by the pool.”
What are a few of your favorite 'hidden gem' activities that don't even require a park ticket?
“Watching the Electrical Water Pageant from the Polynesian or Grand Floridian area is incredibly underrated. Resort hopping during the holidays is one of my favorite things to recommend because the Disney resorts are stunningly themed and each one feels completely different.
“Disney Springs is another favorite because there is so much live entertainment, dining, shopping and unique experiences without needing a park ticket.”
Are there any common misconceptions you hear from families who want to plan a Disney trip?
“A lot of families think Disney has become ‘too complicated’ or that they have missed the window to afford or enjoy it.
“The truth is, Disney looks very different for every family. There is no one-size-fits-all way to do it. Our role is helping families navigate the options, simplify the process and help create a plan that works for their family.”
If you could give a family just one piece of heartfelt advice to make sure their next trip feels truly magical, what would it be?
“Put the phone down sometimes.
“The magical moments families remember years later are usually not the perfectly planned ones. It is the laughter while waiting for a ride, the excitement on a child’s face seeing the castle for the first time or even the late-night conversations walking back to the resort.
“Do not spend the entire trip chasing perfection. Be present enough to actually feel the magic while you are in it.”
If a family wanted to work with you to book their next Disney vacation, how could they reach out to you? What does the process look like?
“Families can reach out through You Can Fly Travels on social media, by email or directly through our website. We start with a conversation about what their family enjoys, their budget, travel goals and what kind of experience they want to create.
“From there, we guide them through resort options, park planning, dining, Lightning Lane strategies and all the details that can quickly become overwhelming. We stay involved before, during and after travel so families feel supported every step of the way.”
