Local Favorite Hushpiggies Delivers a Flavor-Packed Twist on Game-Day Snacking

Founded by Lebanon local Shawn Smith, Hushpiggies is known for its dry rubs, spices and BBQ sauces. The company quickly grew from its mason jar and roadside beginnings in 2008, becoming one of Lebanon’s staple flavors today. Hushpiggies focuses on “quality over quantity,” and the results are evident in small-batch flavorful mixtures that elevate any recipe — even one as simple as Chex mix. Smith, who also owns The Jewelers, brings the heat in this recipe for a twist on a classic game day snack.

The Spicy Meat Candy Chex Mix incorporates unmistakable Hushpiggies flair with Smitty’s Small Batch BBQ Sauce and the fan-favorite Spicy Meat Candy seasoning. Combined with simple ingredients, this recipe produces crunch with a punch. It is perfect for football season when friends gather around the TV or for hosting game night.

The Hushpiggies elements can be found at select local Lebanon retailers as well as online at Meat-Candy.com. Gather your ingredients for a recipe you will return to again and again, and experience why locals love the Hushpiggies difference.

Hushpiggies Spicy Meat Candy Chex Mix

  • Makes: About 12–14 cups
  • Oven: 250°F
  • Cook time: About 1 hour

The Mix

  • 4 cups Corn Chex
  • 4 cups Rice Chex
  • 2 cups mini pretzels
  • 1 1/2 cups Cheez-Its
  • 1/2 cup almonds
  • 1/2 cup cashews
  • 1/2 cup peanuts

Smitty’s Seasoning Sauce

  • 8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter
  • 1/3 cup Smitty’s Small Batch BBQ Sauce
  • 3 1/2 tablespoons Spicy Meat Candy
  • 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar
  • Optional: 1/2–1 teaspoon cayenne for serious heat

Make It

  1. Heat the oven to 250°F.
  2. Combine all the Chex, pretzels, Cheez-Its and nuts in a very large roasting pan.
  3. Melt the butter over low heat. Whisk in Smitty’s Small Batch and brown sugar. Let it simmer gently for about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in 3 tablespoons Spicy Meat Candy. (Set 1/2 tablespoon to the side)
  4. Slowly drizzle the warm mixture over the Chex mixture while tossing. Don’t dump it all in one spot — you want a thin coating on everything.
  5. Spread it out in the roasting pan and bake for 1 hour, stirring thoroughly every 15 minutes.
  6. To make it unmistakably Hushpiggies, Smith recommends: At the 45-minute mark, sprinkle the remaining 1/2 tablespoon of Spicy Meat Candy over everything, toss, then bake for the final 15 minutes.
  7. Spread it on parchment or sheet pans and let it cool completely. It gets substantially crunchier as it cools.
