Maintaining optimal dental health is fundamental to overall well-being, and advancements in dental technology are playing a crucial role in transforming the field of oral care. As technology continues to evolve, so does the ability to diagnose, treat, and prevent dental issues. Dr. Kurt Mackie continuously explores and employs new technological advancements in his burgeoning Boerne office to help people keep their mouths healthy.

Most adults have had years of patchwork dentistry. In our mobile and fast-paced society, dentists try to fix problems instead of taking a comprehensive, long-term approach. Patients that Dr. Mackie sees are often seeking solutions after years of frustration. Comprehensive treatments involve engineering a bite to an anatomically stable position. He creates bite guards from an anatomical point of view, creating a bite that is nondestructive and comfortable. This method has a higher clinical success rate than other bite guards because it takes into account the position of bones, muscles, and other tissues and provides a long-term solution. Bite guards stop muscle activity and curb the cycle of clenching or grinding without the need for major surgery.

When it comes to restorative dentistry, advancements in materials and techniques are reshaping the way dental procedures are performed. Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology has streamlined processes. With the help of digital impressions, dental restorations can be created with exceptional precision, improving the overall quality of restorations. The quality of scanners has advanced to such a degree that dentists can scan arches instead of taking impressions.

Another noteworthy development is the use of laser technology in various dental procedures. Lasers offer a minimally invasive alternative for tasks such as cavity repair, gum surgery, and teeth whitening. Laser dentistry minimizes discomfort, reduces the need for anesthesia, and promotes faster healing. Diode lasers are utilized to disinfect teeth and heal wounds. This technology represents a shift in the way certain dental procedures are conducted, offering patients a more comfortable and efficient experience.

This embrace of proven new technologies and patient-centered treatments has characterized Dr. Mackie throughout his career. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1983 before beginning a career as a commissioned officer in the public health service. After running a health clinic for several years, he began his own practice in the Rio Grande Valley. The practice prioritized comprehensive dentistry and included an oral surgeon and an orthodontist. In 2015, Dr. Mackie relocated full-time to the Hill Country. At a standard dentist, patients get their teeth cleaned before having an evaluation from the dentist. However, Dr. Mackie begins patient care with a comprehensive evaluation where they have plenty of time to discuss questions, problems, or concerns. In his relationship-based practice, patients are treated holistically.

In addition to comprehensive dentistry, Dr. Mackie prioritizes patient education and mentorship. At Boerne and Champion High Schools, a practicum program gives students an opportunity to experience various fields. Students who show interest in medical, dentistry, pharmacy, or nursing careers can take an exam and interview to be accepted into the practicum. Interns at Dr. Mackie’s office are educated about infection control, room setup, and preparation, and they even sit in on treatments and consults. Students who demonstrate particular skill go on to perform chairside assistance. Through the program, several of Dr. Mackie’s interns are training to be the next generation of dental health providers.

The marriage of dental health and technological innovation is reshaping the landscape of oral care. Dr. Mackie’s utilization of new tools offers local residents a diverse range of options for a holistic, person-centered approach to dentistry. From advanced diagnostic systems to cutting-edge techniques, technology is enhancing every facet of dentistry. As these innovations continue to evolve, the future of dental health promises more personalized, efficient, and accessible care for individuals around the globe.
