Summer is in full swing in the Las Vegas Valley. But any local knows it doesn’t need a formal introduction. The intense, sweltering heat of the season is unmistakable, offering little escape before the sun goes down.
Luckily, some of the best summer memories are made right at home after dusk when we can explore our outdoor spaces with some relief and, with intentional changes to existing living spaces, the season can be fully embraced.
Kim Wicklund, the owner of Premiere Audio and Video Integration, works with clients on creating livable spaces that are weather-adaptive. Spaces, she says, that “truly shine after sunset.” Technology is the driver of many of these climate-controlled upgrades that range from motorized shades and layered lighting to integrated systems for cooling and outdoor entertainment on the patio.
“The goal isn’t just staying cool, it’s designing spaces that feel inviting, functional and enjoyable even during the hottest months of the year,” Kim explains.
COMFORT FROM THE INSIDE OUT
There’s truth in the adage “there’s no place like home,” and when the temperatures are rising, there’s no better place for refuge. When making adjustments to maximize comfort and enjoyment, starting small and smart is key.
“One of the most important considerations is designing with flexibility and flow in mind,” she says. “Spaces that transition easily from indoors to outdoors, and from day to night, tend to feel more livable and welcoming.”
A great start is installing a whole-home control system, which allows lighting and other room regulating to operate with effortless efficiency. Motorized shades and layered lighting are perfect for reducing daytime heat and integrating with smart-home technology. Their popularity is growing in large part due to their ability to offer modern aesthetics and comfort and the convenience of managing them from anywhere.
“Choosing systems that work together, rather than as standalone features, creates a more cohesive experience,” making an easy transition from day to night, Kim adds.
ENTERTAINING WITH EASE
With thoughtful designs, outdoor spaces can be an oasis of comfort and entertaining any time of the year, but especially in the summer after a full day of unrelenting sun. The best part? Even just the smallest upgrades can make the biggest difference.
“Integrated lighting, fans and cooling elements extend the usability of the home well into the night,” she says. This matters because many of summer’s most beloved traditions, like backyard movie nights or evening celebrations, are made outside. “Soft, layered outdoor lighting, combined with subtle background music, can completely change how a space feels.”
Speaking of backyard movie nights, Premiere Audio and Video has been hard at work installing high brightness TVs and projection systems at residential spaces across the Las Vegas area, where outdoor home entertainment is becoming even more popular. “[These additions], paired with weather-resistant audio, create an immersive experience without overwhelming the space.”
For homeowners, the investment pays off to be well worth the effort, allowing them to enjoy each moment with their guests without worrying about keeping them comfortable. Integrated speakers, landscape lighting and cooling features, like the ones Premiere installs, transform ordinary settings into captivating spaces that make it hard for anyone to leave.
Practicality should be the goal when updating any area, Kim advises her clients, and the entire space should be considered. “Investing in quality infrastructure and cohesive design allows these spaces to remain flexible, functional and enjoyable well beyond the warmer months.”
LONG AFTER SUMMER’S SUNSET
After all, summer is but a short season, so being intentional about creating spaces that are adaptable and inviting year-round should be a priority.
“Many of the improvements homeowners make now offer long-term value,” such as integrated lighting, smart shading and climate systems, Kim says. “When a home is designed to support how people actually live and relax, it becomes easier to enjoy every season to its fullest.”
