For Hang Ups owner Ursula Overidek, style isn’t confined to a single design trend. (Although she’s currently seeing gold, ornate designs making waves with the under-45 crowd.) What it really translates to is endless possibilities.
With an extensive selection of frame types and materials, she finds the perfect balance between the personality of a client’s artwork and their budget. The goal is to create a piece that feels complete.
“Someone brought in a rather fine traditional landscape of a hilly landscape. My first thought was a classic frame,” says Overdiek. “But the lady talked about the rough house their grandfather had on this ranch, the casual lifestyle, and the muddy shoes and clothes when she visited. So, we took a little more woodsy, rustic frame to express the unseen memories.”
Overdiek believes the frame should become part of the narrative rather than simply surrounding it.
Before choosing a frame, she encourages customers to think beyond the artwork itself. Is this a decorative print for a guest room, or is it your mother’s final painting? Is it a funny snapshot from your child’s birthday that will be replaced next year, or an antique photograph that can never be recreated? Thoughtful framing starts with understanding how it will sync with your home’s story.
Overdiek has spent years framing pieces from people and places around the world, each carrying its own cultural influence and personal significance.
“Colorful, bold art from Latin American countries needs a different frame than romantic memories expressed in a painting of the Amalfi Coast,” says Overdiek. “Or there are beautiful fabric pieces from India or handmade needle art. So many hours of stitching, painting, or crocheting have to be treated in specific ways and considered with a deep or stable frame.”
Hang Ups routinely tackles oversized artwork that many stores won’t accept, including those measuring 104x54 inches. Beyond custom framing, they also breathe new life into existing, beloved framed works through repairs and matboard replacements.
“There’s way more work and knowledge involved in picture framing than most think,” says Overdiek. “But we listen to the demands of our customers.”
