A resolution is a firm decision to do something. Not achieving that "something" often feels like failure. Do you really want to kick off 2025 with that kind of pressure in your professional life?
Yet, the New Year marks an exciting time for fresh starts, and doing nothing can feel uninspiring. Instead of rigid resolutions, why not set intentions? Unlike resolutions that focus on narrow outcomes, intentions are about aligning your work life with what truly matters—your values, goals, and purpose. They’re flexible, forgiving, and motivating.
The final new moon of 2024 falls on December 30, creating the perfect opportunity for inward contemplation, rest, and renewal before diving into another busy year. As you start your new year, take this time to reflect on these guiding questions:
● How can I feel more engaged and fulfilled at work this year?
● Which professional relationships do I want to nurture?
● What steps can I take to create more harmony between my career and personal life?
For me, this New Year, I mapped out my year on a huge annual wall calendar and made sure to include at least one adrenaline-fueled or “scary” goal per month. I also blocked out non-negotiable time during my work week for nurturing practices to ensure I stay grounded and energized.
Setting intentions isn’t just about crafting goals; it’s about creating a vision for your professional life that’s meaningful and sustainable. Unlike resolutions, which are often forgotten by February, intentions adapt and evolve. They help you make thoughtful decisions, navigate challenges, and stay connected to your "why" at work.
This year, trade burnout for balance and self-criticism for self-compassion. The journey begins with a single question: What’s the best that can happen?
