Nearly 30 years ago, Dierks and his dad loaded up their family truck so the country-loving musician could try his luck in Nashville. Fast forward to now, the fan favorite is rocking the charts.
This year, the superstar returns to The People’s Open, gracing the stage at the Coors Light Birds Nest. And because Dierks considers Arcadia home at heart, Bentley took the time to chat with our publisher, reflecting on growing up in AZ and being an honorary Thunderbird.
Why are you excited to headline at the Coors Light Birds Nest?
It’s one of the biggest parties of the year; a unique venue and lively audience.
Did you attend The Open as a kid?
My dad was a Thunderbird and worked The Open, so it was awesome when I became an Honorary Thunderbird.
What are your fondest memories being raised in the Valley?
I grew up in Arcadia before Arcadia was cool. Memories include causing havoc at Fashion Square, skateboarding around the mall. We also hopped in people’s yards taking beer from their refrigerators and partook in legendary desert parties doing bottle rocket wars. Our family spent summers at Lake Powell, and for a job, I painted citrus tree trunks.
When did you fall in love with country?
I recall driving around with my daddy always listening to country music and went to every concert possible. However, my first concert was Bon Jovi with Skid Row at Compton Terrace. Later, I became friends with Bon Jovi and told him I never watched the show because there was a girl next to me wearing a black leather dress; I spent the whole time staring at her. In response, Bon Jovi replied: that’s the sign of a good concert.
When did you move to Nashville?
When I was 19, my dad and I drove cross-country to Nashville in my ’94 Chevy Truck. I have a hard time of letting go and still have that truck.
How does it feel to be living your dream?
I used to separate my career with my personal life, and at some point, you realize it’s one full life... the ultimate dream.
While you live in Nashville, do you still consider Phoenix home?
Absolutely. I love popping into Whiskey Row, The Henry, and hiking Camelback.
Tell us about your childhood sweetheart-turned-wifey, Cassidy.
Cass and I met at Ingleside Middle School; I had a crush on her. We dated on and off, and in 2005 I was opening for George Straight, she walked on our bus, and I knew that was it.
If Cass could describe you in three words, what would she would say?
Loyal, a natural dad, and that I'm funny.
What do you love about being a dad?
I love the big moments, but also the daily grind like school drop-offs.
Any new year’s resolutions?
Savoring and celebrating the good times.
What do you do to relax?
I hike; being in nature is recharging. I’m also a pilot and love flying.
What are your favorite songs to perform?
“I Hold On” because it talks about my truck and is a love song about my wife. My favorite song I ever recorded was “Son of the Sun.” It’s a personal ode to sometimes needing to lose myself so I don’t lose my mind.
Any pre-performance rituals?
I have a drink 30 minutes before I go on; usually a spicy margarita. I’ll have some whiskey waiting for me on stage as well. Before showtime, my band and I go around the horn and say something we’re grateful for.
Tell us about your recent endeavors Phoenix’s Global Ambassador and WithCo.
I’m an investor and fan of The Global Ambassador spearheaded by my buddies Sam Fox and Brian Frakes. The hotel is across the street from where my dad once worked!
