Design expert Jamie Batson brings heart and soul to the spaces she touches, known for creating interiors that feel lived-in, loved, and layered with intention. At home, her favorite place to style is the living room—a space she considers “the heart of the home.” For Jamie, the key to making it shine is to “create an atmosphere that feels both inviting and cohesive.” A place where people gather, unwind, and feel like they truly belong.

Through her work at Dwell Home Co., Jamie stays closely attuned to evolving design trends and timeless style. She believes great design isn’t about chasing what's popular—it’s about curating what speaks to you. When asked about current accessories that help elevate a room, she recommends leaning into classic, beautiful pieces. Still, she notes, “block print pillows, décor with soft scalloped edges, and vintage art are definitely having a moment right now!”

When designing a space that feels “calm, collected, and connected to nature,” Jamie emphasizes the power of accessories. “Accessories are what make a space feel finished—they’re the final touch that brings your personality into the room. Warm neutrals, natural materials, and vintage-inspired pieces can provide a grounded feel in any room. Soft, patterned pillows to aged ceramics and stacked books, each detail plays a role in making the space feel layered—but never overdone.”

Vintage and sentimental pieces, she adds, bring soul and story. “Two of my favorite pieces include a small original abstract landscape by a local artist and a black-and-white photo of my husband kneeling on the beach with our son, who was just four at the time (he’s 17 now!). It was taken at Cannon Beach, one of my favorite places, and it’s a moment that holds special meaning for our family.”

Jamie’s formula for creating a space that you’ll love as much as she cherishes her own home design includes five key styling tips. First, varying the height and placement of items creates visual movement and keeps things from feeling flat. Whether it’s three layered books or a trio of objects on a tray, odd-number groupings feel more natural and balanced. Next, when choosing items to place together, mixing materials is another approach that will keep your styling from feeling one-dimensional and makes the space feel curated and lived-in. Think of layering different materials like wood, marble, metal, woven textures, and ceramics to add warmth, texture, and depth.

Repeating color, material, and texture provides cohesion to a space by echoing elements like a warm wood tone or a hint of green. This subtle repetition helps make the space feel connected and thoughtfully designed. To really make a room stand out, Jamie emphasized to think about contrast. Pair dark and light, soft with hard, or matte with shine. Contrast brings balance and allows each element to stand out, creating a visually interesting and intentional look. Finally, when styling a room that is pleasing to the eye, the 2/3 rule comes to mind for Jamie. When styling a coffee or console table, aim for your styled grouping to cover about two-thirds of the surface. It strikes a balance between visual interest and function, leaving space for the eye to rest (or a morning cup of coffee).

Overall, Jamie and her team at Dwell encourage others to take that leap to make their home design tell their story. “Whether you’re investing in a new piece or finding a creative way to re-style what you already own, the process should feel inspiring—not intimidating. With a few simple principles and a personal touch, you can create a space that feels beautifully layered and uniquely yours.”
