Hiking is a phenomenal way to get out and enjoy nature and to stay fit, and Colorado is a playground for hiking enthusiasts. The National Park Service recommends everyone follow the principle of Leaving No Trace so all our trails remain in great condition.

Depending on where you're exploring, you may not need all these supplies, but consider bringing more than you think you will need. Here are a few things that you can pack to make your hike go more smoothly.

  • Layers of clothing for the heat and cold

  • Sun protection including sunglasses, sunscreen, and maybe a hat

  • Compass and GPS system

  • A flashlight, lantern and/or headlamp

  • A small, basic first aid kit

  • Lightweight rain gear

  • Emergency kit supplies such as matches, a multi-tool, duct tape, and an emergency blanket

  • And more food and water than you think is necessary
