Essential Oils for Men

Natural Healing, One Drop at a Time

While aromatherapy has been traditionally thought of as a practice for women only, the essential oil industry has seen an increase in the use of more natural products and pure essential oils by men over the past ten years. In general, essential oils are gender-neutral with most of the fragrances appealing equally to both sexes. However certain woodsy, spicy and citrusy blends are more appealing to men because of their distinct masculine scents. Whether the essential oil is being used as a fragrance, a topical skin ointment or to enhance a spa treatment—everyone’s preferences are different. The best attribute about essential oils is that they can be used alone or combined with other oils and products in many different ways and the benefits are endless.

History

While the use of essential oils goes back centuries, it has been found that several cultures used different types of pure oils for embalming, medical treatments and ancient spa therapies. The term, “aromatherapy” was coined by French perfumer and biochemist, René-Maurice Gattefossé, who wrote about using essential oils in both practices of fragrance making and medical treatments.

According to the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy, aromatherapy is defined as, “The use of aromatic plant extracts and essential oils in massage, baths and direct contact with the skin,” and, “A science of utilizing naturally extracted aromatic essences from plants to balance, harmonize and promote the health of body, mind and spirit.”

Best Uses

From deodorants to body cleansers to cologne, smell is important to men. When looking at the main ingredients in men’s products with heavier fragrances, they typically include essential oil extracts of some kind that have been diluted and mixed with alcohol and other ingredients.  Sandalwood, black pepper, peppermint and eucalyptus oil are very common in men’s products. Beginning on the bottom with heavy notes of patchouli, vanilla and musk, medium and top notes are very distinct of woodsy, musky and citrus scents. When men choose pure essential oils for fragrance or to enhance a massage, they typically find something that is close to fragrances they use in their other products.
