Fall in Kansas City

The ultimate family bucket list: at home & around town

There’s something about fall in Kansas City. With the changing leaves and cooler temperatures, this time of year brings endless opportunities to get out and explore. To share a few ideas for making the most of fall, we teamed up with local creator and mom, Faith Prindle. From backyard crafts to local orchards, pumpkin patches and trails, here are Faith’s top picks for family fun this fall!

At Home Fall Activities

Fall Nature Walk Scavenger Hunt: Explore your neighborhood or backyard looking for colorful leaves, acorns, pinecones. Use cardstock and glue to create a fun nature art project.

Make a Fall Leaf Garland: Gather colorful leaves on a walk, then use clothespins and twine to string together a festive seasonal garland.

Family Fall Bucket List: Sit down together and create a list of all the things that your family wants to do together before the fall season is over.

Tape Spiderweb Game: Use painters tape to create a giant spider web on the floor. Kids can practice balance-walking the lines or toss plastic spiders into the grid for points

No-Carve Pumpkin Decorating: Avoid the gooey mess and decorate pumpkins with paint, markers, stickers, and other craft supplies.

Build Your Own Scarecrow: Use old clothes, wooden stake and other supplies you already have at home to create your own family scarecrow for the yard or front porch.

Fall Activities Around Kansas City

Local Nature Center: Explore the changing fall colors and enjoy a family-friendly nature hike. Our favorites include Burr Oak Woods Nature Center and Lakeside Nature Center.

Pumpkin Patch: Head out for classic seasonal fun at family-favorite patches like Faulkner’s Ranch or The Pumpkin Pad.

Deanna Roe Children’s Farmstead: Visit the farm animals and enjoy fun outdoor activities before they close for the season on October 31.

Kansas City Northern Miniature Railroad: Catch a weekend train ride on the miniature railroad for a fun and unique Kansas City family outing. In October visit on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Sundays from 12:00-6:00 p.m.

GloWild at the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium: Take a nighttime stroll through larger-than-life, illuminated lantern displays across the zoo grounds.

Weston Red Barn Farm: Spend a fall day picking apples and enjoying the seasonal atmosphere.
