When you met with the family, what were their goals for the design?
This was a large-scale renovation for a young family in Dunwoody. They came to me wanting the home to finally feel like them: more color, more personality, more pattern. The bones were there, but the spaces didn't reflect who they were at all. Beyond the aesthetic refresh, they had some very specific functional goals: better flow between the kitchen and screened-in porch, a dedicated prep kitchen with added storage, a mudroom and a primary bathroom that felt like a retreat. It was a full transformation, inside and out.
What are a few of your favorite design elements of this project?
The color and pattern work throughout is what I'm most proud of. On the porch, we worked with deep sage and olive greens that feel lush and tie into the beautiful wooded backyard. The prep kitchen has playful pink cabinetry paired with authentic terrazzo flooring in earthy tones; it's joyful and unexpected. The primary bathroom has deep green-gray cabinetry anchored by the most beautiful floral wallpaper. The lighting was also a real focus: oversized globe pendants and wall sconces on the porch, and polished nickel and glass vanity lights in the bath that catch the light off the tile in the best way.
What are three "get the look" items or design elements you can recommend to our readers?
Layered texture, soft curves and authentic materials: I come back to these on every single project. Texture is what gives a room depth. I always mix textiles, leather, natural wood and metal so the eye has somewhere interesting to travel. Soft curves, whether in a piece of furniture or a custom architectural detail, bring a sense of ease and calm that a room full of hard lines just can't achieve. Lastly, natural materials are non-negotiable for me. There’s no substitute for authentic stone, solid brass, handcrafted tile or natural fiber textiles. You can always tell the difference, and so can your clients.
