A mom and daughter-in-law succeed with a local boutique

Judy Dragoo’s first passion was teaching, but she’s always had a love for fashion. Because of this love, the mom of two grown sons has recently opened Judy Wear Boutique—a place that features timeless pieces for women from all walks of life.

“Ever since my first home economics class, I made my own clothes,” Judy shares. “I would create and design from different patterns. My mom was really stylish and was in the beauty business for over 50 years. When I was still teaching, I made seasonal tops for my colleagues; I would embellish blank T-shirts. When they would wear them, they would say they were wearing their ‘Judy Wear’ that day, hence the name Judy Wear Boutique. … In the boutique, I only sell garments that I would wear.”

Judy originally owned a Judy Wear location in Sierra Vista (which is now under new ownership), but recently moved and opened a new boutique in Chandler to be closer to her sons and her daughter-in-law, Erin, who is an intricate part of the shop.

“The boutique carries Habitat, Jess N Jane, Focus, Lulu B, Fenini, Tulip, Snapdragon, Oh My Gauze, Gauzey, Prairie Cotton, Vine Street, Cut Loose, Impulse, Sacred Threads, and Cobblestone. We hand pick from different brands to provide a variety,” Judy shares. “The fashion, I would say, is anywhere from casual wear to professional; versatile pieces that can be dressed up or dressed down. Great travel items; great for cruises. Fashion for many different body types. We want unique fashion that you can’t get anyplace else, and we carry it in limited quantities.”

While Judy manages the clothing side, Erin purchases the jewelry.

“I would describe the jewelry selection as bold, striking, fun and intricate,” Erin says. “I buy a lot of jewelry with color, so it’s really fun to pair with just the right tops.”

Her favorite jewelry brand is currently Sylca but the shop carries multiple brands and styles.

Although the boutique has only been open a short amount of time, the dynamic duo already has teamwork down to a science: Judy is the owner and manages much of the business end, and Erin, as a journalism and public relations student at Arizona State University, handles the shop’s social media, website, displays, promotions, and more.

Judy believes that what stands out about the boutique is its customer service and personalized touch, while Erin shares that she loves it because “our boutique is so interesting, and it’s ever-changing.”

“I hope that we continue to build relationships and provide positive shopping opportunities for ladies in the Valley,” Judy says, looking toward the future. “I want customers to realize that it’s not about the sale, it’s about the relationship and them feeling good about their purchases.”

“I would love to see the boutique become a huge part of Chandler,” Erin adds. “I want it to be a place where women can come and not feel pressured to buy anything, but just to stop by and chat with us. We have an amazing group of women that work with us and really want to see Judy Wear succeed.”

This month, the duo say that they will be hosting a variety of Mother’s Day specials.

Both Judy and Erin agree that the local community has been welcoming. “Our customers are all so incredible, Erin shares. “I love meeting them and hearing their stories and learning from them. Being a part of this boutique has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, and it just gets better and better.”
