February is an especially good time to think of all the “sweet things” in your life. Hopefully, your loved ones come to mind first, then the other joys in your life…hobbies, friends, memories, careers, favorite desserts, sports, and passions of all kinds.
In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, and in honor of all the sweet things in life, we chose to feature a few of the local bakeries where you can find beautiful and delicious sweet things for your special someone…or satisfy your own sweet tooth.
Sweet Things Bakery - New Town
Sweet Things Bakery in New Town-St. Charles makes baked goods the old-fashioned way…by hand, in small batches, using only the best natural ingredients.
“We started the business out of a rented commercial kitchen baking for corporate customers, caterers and farmers markets,” says owner Beth Thompson. “We were very successful at the Farmers Market in Ferguson and with the help of some community leaders there we opened our storefront in the retail district December 2006 called Cose Dolci Bakery). In 2017, we decided we wanted to grow the business. Because we consider ourselves to be a neighborhood style bakery, we thought New Town would be a good fit for us, so we moved the business there and opened our store in July 2017.”
She says some of their best-selling sweets are carrot cake, key lime tarts, peanut butter cookies, salted caramel cookies, decorated sugar cookies, scones and biscotti.
Hot Box Cookies
Hot Box Cookies is coming to St Charles! Hot Box Cookies has been delivering fresh baked warm cookies since its inception in 2008. With stores located in Columbia, MO, Leewood, KS, and St Louis, MO the newest location will be opening this spring at the Streets of St Charles. The St Charles store will offer delivery, catering and will be open to the public for walk-in orders.
The newest owners, Dan & Michele Fitzgerald, are super excited to bring Hot Box Cookies to the St Charles area.
“The Streets of St Charles is a fast-growing area, and we are delighted to be a part of that,” say the Fitzgeralds.

Sweetology - O'Fallon
Sweetology, in O’Fallon, Mo., is known as “the St. Louis area’s premiere destination for interactive cake, cookie and cupcake decorating.”
A full-time staff of Sweetologists are always on hand to answer questions and offer decorating tutorials to help guests make the most of their cake decorating experience. There are also a variety of cake decorating classes and kids club programs offered throughout the year, as well as cake decorating camps for kids in the summer.
“No reservation necessary, you can walk in and decorate any time. We’re open seven days a week,” says Owner Kara Newmark, who opened her first store in St. Louis in 2014. Now, 7 years and 3 stores later, Sweetology has opened its E-commerce store and is shipping the fun nationally.
Kara’s dream was to capture the magic she experienced as a young child when her mom decorated her 12th birthday cake inspired by the cover of Seventeen magazine. She says Sweetology isn’t about the cake. Rather, it is about creating those experiences and moments that bring us closer and marking the milestones with memories.
