When restaurateur Mike Chase opened Copper Cellar in 1975, there was also a nugget of an idea for a local market.
Mike grew up around Washington D.C. where small, local markets are commonplace. There were little Italian markets where customers could buy cut salami and stuffed shells to take home and bake, and markets that sold fresh fruit and vegetables from local farmers. As the family of Copper Cellar restaurants grew, the idea for a market persisted.
“It had been in the works for a while,” says Marketing Director Kelsey Chase-Headrick. “When things got crazy [amid the COVID-19 crisis], we pushed it and opened ahead of schedule. We opened at the beginning of the pandemic.”
What you can Find at the Copper Cellar Restaurants
The Copper Cellar Marketplace is located on the corner of Chesapeake’s West Knoxville location on Parkside Drive and carries a wide selection of meat, seafood, fresh produce, and prepared appetizers, side dishes, and desserts. Many of the favorite foods one could find on a menu from Copper Cellar, Smoky Mountain Brewery, Calhoun’s, or Chesapeake’s restaurant can be found at the Marketplace, either already prepared or ready for customers to cook themselves.
“We work with the same local farmers that service our restaurants. We get our tomatoes from Blount County, our corn from Monroe and Blount County. We carry Benton’s Bacon, and for Easter, we partnered with Dean’s Bakery in Oak Ridge,” says Kelsey. “We have our own homemade baked goods, like our Key Lime Pie, at the market too.”
Copper Foods runs a daily truck from Boston for fresh seafood, and all of the meat is cut by their butchers at the commissary. Customers can also purchase Smoky Mountain Brewery beer and proprietary sauces and dressings.
“Come in and shop,” says Kelsey. “We’re open, but check social media sites for daily pricing and availability.”
