From Hustle to Authenticity

Finding Balance in the Pursuit of Success

What happens when the drive for more leaves you feeling less? When striving turns into surviving? In these moments, I have learned that authenticity can be a powerful antidote, creating space for rest, connection and the courage to admit: “I just need a break.”

Society seems to demand that we constantly strive for the next thing; volunteer for the charity event, play in the sports league, achieve the next level at work. That mentality of striving, or that “hustle culture” mentality, can produce amazing things. People like professional athletes and business owners are constantly trying to break records or come up with the next big idea, which produces financial success, innovation and exciting new ways to solve problems. I personally have benefited from having this hustle mindset, building a fulfilling career, starting a family and serving my community. However, if the hustle mindset takes over, we lose certain things. What about when you’re trapped in a cycle of never feeling “enough” no matter how much you achieve? When you keep pushing, convinced that if you can just get over the next hurdle, it would all be worth it and that moment never arrives? At the end of the day, what is left other than a feeling of guilt or emptiness?

I was at brunch with friends a while ago and realized I didn’t have the energy to pretend everything was fine. So, when asked how I was doing, I took what felt like a huge risk and answered honestly. “I’m exhausted,” I admitted. “I just need a break.” To my surprise, my friend responded with relief and empathy, saying they felt the same. Our honesty with each other in that moment created an authentic connection that broke through the surface so that we were able to feel seen and to see each other. That moment felt profound in its simplicity, reminding me that being seen and understood, even in the midst of fatigue, was not only okay but sought after. Since that experience, I’ve chosen to take the chance to be more authentic in my interactions, reinvigorating me in ways I never expected.

Being open about my struggles not only relieved me of the stress of pretending I was fine, but also brought me closer to others. Now, I am drawn to people who show up as their genuine selves, balancing both their hustle and their humanity. These authentic connections have become invaluable, deepening my relationships and energizing me in ways that support my growth and impact. For those who are able to take a step back and dedicate real time to self-care when exhausted, please continue to do so. But for others, that simply isn’t an option right now. The constant need for productivity and demands on my time have not slowed down. Embracing authenticity has become my secret weapon in sustaining the energy needed to keep going. When I allow myself to be honest about my limits, with myself and others, I create room for rest and rejuvenation.

When we put the hustle as the most important thing, we can lose sight of things that really matter. Admitting when I needed help created space for others to step in to lend a hand. Authenticity puts the soul back in. It creates genuine connection with other human beings. So, as we continue our journey through life and work, striving for the next achievement or accomplishment, let’s not just chase success but also create room for authenticity, vulnerability and balance.
