From sheer layers to polarizing hues, the fashion world has eagerly awaited the return of fall style. Over the last several years, fashion lovers embraced more practical styles in earthy tones that broadly became known as “quiet luxury.” While I don’t see those trends dissipating completely, the trends surfacing for fall 2025 aren’t exactly what most would consider “quiet.”
While the emergence of new trends every season is always interesting, in my opinion, it’s really just a way to refine your own personal style. The goal isn’t to replace your current wardrobe with everything you see on the runway or that’s featured in a fashion magazine. The goal is to incorporate rising trends into your current wardrobe in hopes of finding a few new style choices that elevate your current aesthetic.
While minimalist dressing and capsule collections have been heavily publicized over the last few seasons, it’s clear that there is a desire for something a bit bolder. After visiting local shop Boutique on Boston and speaking with owner Denise McCreery, I was assured that the world of fashion is moving in a different direction this fall—and I couldn’t be more excited.
Let’s break down a few of the trends you can expect to see in local boutiques and department stores in the coming months.
Tailoring
Power suiting isn’t new to the fashion landscape, especially over the last couple of years, but the way it’s worn in 2025 is a bit more refined. Last year we saw more oversized suiting, but this fall is all about a more fitted silhouette. McCreery, who is committed to helping women feel their best, believes that power dressing can do wonders for a women’s psyche. In fact, she encourages women to wear the suit always—even on a random Tuesday. The right suit with the right tailoring can elevate your entire personality.
Sheer Layers
“Naked dressing” has become increasingly popular with the resurgence of boho chic, but not everyone is comfortable with their private undergarments on display. That being said, there is a more conservative way to incorporate sheer layers and accessories into your look. Whether it’s a translucent overlay, chiffon sleeves, or a mesh tote, where there’s a will, there’s a way. At Boutique on Boston, I came across a beautiful black jacket with sheer sleeves and dark florals that captures this new trend perfectly. McCreery chose this jacket herself and it’s truly “sheer” perfection.
Faux Fur
Faux fur has been on the outskirts of the most talked about trends for the last several years, but it had its resurgence on 2025 runways. When we think of faux fur, we typically think of the traditional, long, fur coat. Think Samantha from Sex in the City. But now we see it showing up in more contemporary ways like faux fur collars and small tote bags. We’ll even see faux fur footwear styles emerge in the coming months. I love a trend that can be embraced in a variety of ways and faux fur definitely hits the mark.
Belts
We often hear that eyebrows can serve as the anchor for the face when it comes to beauty and the same can be said for belts in regard to fashion. Incorporating belts isn’t a new trend, but it’s certainly a big one for 2025. Belts are truly the easiest way to elevate a look. This year, we’re seeing statement belts worn over loose knit dresses, mid-length jackets, and on a low-rise pant. In fact, we’re even seeing multiple belts layered on top of one another. Belts are officially back, and I think they’re here to stay.
Jewel Tones
Jewel tones are perfect for fall and they typically pair well with another color we’ve seen dominate the runways: brown. The jewel tone that’s headlining the year is purple, and it’s making a statement. Some are saying purple is the new pink, and although I love a pink knit, there’s something bold, romantic, and powerful about this aubergine hue. Expect to see it as a velvet suit jacket or a long wool coat. McCreery recommends pairing the color with metallic accessories to make it pop more for a night out with the girls. It’s safe to say the deep shades of purple will be a popular option this season.
As we’ve seen in preparation for fall, fashion is calling for louder, bolder, and more vibrant style choices, allowing women (and men) to experiment. My advice? Step out of your comfort zone, explore local boutiques like Boutique on Boston, and find pieces that stand out. Fashion is a language and it’s one of the ways we can share the story of who we are with the world.
