It’s likely that until you watched Crazy Rich Asians, you had never heard of mahjong, a centuries-old Chinese tile game played by four people using colorful rectangular tiles. Players draw and discard tiles to build sets and pairs, aiming to complete a winning hand before anyone else. While the game has long been a staple in many Asian communities, it’s recently gained popularity beyond its roots. From boutique coffee shops to your Instagram feed, mahjong is suddenly everywhere.
Leading the mahjong charge in Boerne is Kristel Powell, founder of the blog Stylin’ Brunette and the visionary force behind the tile-enthusiast club Troop Mahjong. The concept blends gameplay with glamour and good company, offering a new kind of social gathering that’s both nostalgic and on-trend. “Mahjong is the perfect mix of strategy, style, and socializing—it checks all the boxes!” says Powell. “I think people are craving more analog ways to connect in this very digital world. Mahjong is timeless, but it feels fresh right now because we’re playing it with a modern, colorful twist.”
Her introduction to the game came in January 2023 at a friend’s game night. Powell knew nothing going in but was immediately captivated. That evening changed everything. “I instantly fell in love. It was challenging in the best way, and I left thinking, ‘I have to figure this out.’”
Once she got the hang of it, her imagination took off. Already known for her vivid party themes and dazzling tablescapes, Powell began dreaming up ways to make mahjong feel accessible and celebratory. She saw an opportunity to turn something classic into something unexpected: a game night experience that was equal parts learning, laughter, and sparkle. “I wanted to share it with everyone. But I also wanted to make it fun, not intimidating. I thought, ‘What if I create a space where women could come together, learn to play, and feel like they’re part of something special?’”
That idea blossomed into Troop Mahjong, a whimsical, style-infused take on traditional gameplay that offers open play events, lessons, a membership society, and even a mahjong-themed summer camp. Its name and spirit draw inspiration from the cult classic ‘80s movie Troop Beverly Hills, and the brand is infused with the same blend of heart, humor, and glam. “Phyllis Neffler is my spirit animal!” Powell laughs. “She was thrown into something totally new and had no clue what she was doing, but she gave it 110% and made it fabulous along the way. That was me with mahjong.”
One of the most playful elements of Troop Mahjong is its signature merit sticker system, a nod to the movie’s merit patches. These collectible, colorful stickers reward players for quirky achievements, from winning with dragon tiles to being the night’s most encouraging player. “It adds a layer of joy and gamification that sets us apart,” says Powell. “There are over 200 Troop Mahjong merit stickers to collect in your Merit Book!”
The gameplay is only half the experience. Powell treats each event as a celebration, thoughtfully curating every detail—think vintage-inspired tablecloths, bright mahjong mats, and beautiful tiles. Each space features playful touches, including a themed menu, floral arrangements, a photo backdrop, and branded signage that match the night’s vibe. Music is always part of the scene, with Taylor Swift, nostalgic throwbacks, and girl-power anthems setting the tone for a joyful, immersive experience.
The aesthetic reflects Powell’s own “grandmillennial-meets-Palm-Beach-prep” style, which shines through every element of Troop Mahjong. “We love florals, bows, chinoiserie, all things sparkly. Basically, if it feels like a mashup of Clueless, Troop Beverly Hills, and a garden party, we’re in the right place.” Guests are encouraged to dress accordingly. Whether it’s a Palm Beach dinner party or “Christmas in July” theme, attendees show up ready to dazzle in statement earrings and colorful outfits. The wardrobe is part of the fun. “I love a theme!” Powell says. “I always say, ‘Come cute, and come ready to play!’”
Beyond the gameplay and stylish aesthetic, it’s the sense of community and shared experience that keeps players coming back. Powell emphasizes that the events are more about connection than competition. She’s watched complete strangers become fast friends after a few games. “Troop Mahjong isn’t just about the tiles—it’s about belonging. We’re building a sisterhood one game night at a time.”
For Powell, the most rewarding moments come when guests feel that spark of surprise and delight. One evening stands out in particular. During a craft night where members decorated their Merit Books over wine and conversation, Powell overheard someone say, “I didn’t know I needed this until now.” She reflects, “That’s the magic. It’s not just about mahjong. It’s about creating space for joy, connection, and community.”
For newcomers who are curious but intimidated, Powell wants to remove the fear factor altogether. If you’re hesitant to try the game, her advice is simple: “First of all, you’ve got this! Everyone starts somewhere, and I promise it’s more approachable than it looks. Find a group that’s welcoming and fun (like Troop Mahjong) and don’t be afraid to ask questions.”
With the heart of a host and the enthusiasm of a glam camp counselor, Powell is on a mission to demystify the game and build community one event at a time. “We make learning feel like summer camp, not a spelling bee,” she says. “Whether you’re brand new or a seasoned pro, there’s a seat at the table for you.”
“It’s not just about mahjong. It’s about creating space for joy, connection, and community.”
