Gettin' Low with Flo

We chat with Flo Rida before he brings the boots with the fur to Chase Field

From Apple Bottom jeans to diamond-certified bangers, Flo Rida brings the swagger, the shine, and the soundtrack to every party. As he gears up to light up Chase Field post-game, we caught up with the hitmaker who made gettin’ low a thing. Here’s pure Flo… style, faith, hustle, and the lyrics that still go off.

As a kid, did music feel like a dream, a plan, or a long shot?
Growing up in Carol City was amazing. We didn’t have much material things, but my single mom and seven sisters had a lot of love. Music and basketball were my early pursuits, but by 15, I was all in with the music, joining a group called the “Ground Hogs.”

What was on young Flo’s playlist?
Nas’ “Illmatic” was the first CD I bought, but being from Miami, you know there was Luke, 2 Live Crew, Poison Clan, Trick and Trina and a lot of Gospel music.

Did you always see yourself on stage?
My 5th grade speech and debate teacher showed me I had charisma and that I could be a performer. I pursued basketball at the same time through high school.

Take us back to the moment that felt like your big break?
At 19, I got the opportunity to substitute for “Fresh Kid Ice” of the 2 Live Crew in Hawaii. Shout out to my partner Shot Gun who set me up with the gig. He’s still on the road with me today.

Why do you think your music still hits today?
Shout out to Mike Caren, my long-time A&R who steered me into that direction. Growing up in Miami, there’s a gumbo of musical genres- reggae, soca, compa, bass, hip hop, dance music and techno- which just seemed so natural. I didn’t know I could combine those things which were so natural, but Mike Caren said it’s what the rap game was missing.

Your songs are still played at every party, wedding, workout class and club night. What gives them that staying power?
It’s celebratory, uptempo, positive good feeling music. Who doesn’t like money, cars, clothes, beautiful women, jewelry and success? As long as people have goals, they’ll be playing my music.

I’m 40 and your stuff still gets me hyped. Plus, my kids listen to your music! How does that make you feel- having your songs stand the test of time?
It feels great. I love the kids, I love parents who expose their kids to my music. So blessed and highly favored.

"Low" has never stopped trending… did you ever imagine it would have this kind of cultural shelf life?
Not at all. Over 10 million sold, over a billion streams, and certified Diamond. All Glory to God.

Did you know Apple Bottom jeans and boots with the fur would go down in music + fashion history? And do you still think boots with the fur are a fashion statement?
Well definitely because Nelly was already claiming “Apple Bottom” so we just continued the trend. The Boots with the Fur has a life of its own.

Where were you when you first heard one of your songs playing in public?
I was at “Banana Joes” in Coconut Grove and the DJ played it like ten times back-to-back. I definitely felt like the man.

Do you feel like the same guy you were when you started, or has Flo Rida evolved?
I’m the same humble guy who puts God first. I have matured in business and in life choices, but I’m basically the same guy.

Gotta ask… where did the Flo Rida name come from?
I grew up in the State of “Flo Rida” and folks like the way I flow and the way I ride the beat.

You’ve always had this larger-than-life, luxury-meets-party energy. How is this a reflection of you off-stage, too?
I remember sleeping on floors, couches and working dirty jobs at the MGM Hotel in Vegas picking out silverware from the trash. Once I got on, I promised that it would be beyond first class as long as God enabled me to thrive.

How has your style evolved from those early days to now?
Early on I repped Florida to the fullest. Over time, my music has taken me around the world and I try not to be so provincial. I understand the import and I try to live up to my image.

How would you describe your off-stage vibe right now… designer, laid-back, or a little of both?
A little of both. I’m always wearing designer, but sometimes I rip the tags off.

Do you have a favorite designer or fashion splurge?
You can never go wrong with Gucci.

What’s the most Flo Rida thing hanging in your closet right now?
I have some Tom Ford jackets which I wear on very special occasions.

What does style mean to you beyond clothes?
Style means confidence and how you carry yourself.

Our Style Issue is all about creative expression… how important is visual energy?
Oh Man, my style is over the top. I love bright colors, high energy, no sleep, loud thumping vibes.

If you could remix one of your own songs with any current artist, who’s your dream feature?
Beyonce remaking “Whistle” or “Low.”

What’s inspiring you these days… musically, visually, artistically?
I would have to say my Label IMG’s artists Oya Babyy, Int’l Nephew and Varie Fresh.

Is there a creative lane you haven’t explored yet that you’re itching to dive into?
Gospel.

You’re performing at the D-backs game… how did that come together?
My guys at CAA recommend me for all the sports teams.

What made you say yes to that stage, and what can fans expect from your performance at Chase Field?
I love sports. When I’m not working, you can usually find me at an arena or a baseball field. The fans can expect high energy and non-stop action.

Who’s your baseball team?
The Marlins.

Well maybe you’ll form a soft spot for our D-Backs. :) If you were a player stepping up to the plate, what would your non-Flo Rida walk-up song be?
“All I do is Win” by DJ Khalid.

The D-backs have this snakeskin swagger and Arizona edge. Does that energy speak to you?
Most definitely.

You’ve performed in stadiums, at the club, on TV… what’s been the wildest or setting to perform in?
Maybe a yacht for two people in the Mediterranean.

Walk us through a memorable moment of your career.
Performing in China to packed crowds of fans who knew my songs word for word but didn’t speak English. By the time I was headed to my 3rd show, I got word that I would be arrested if I took my shirt off because the women were so affected. LOL.

You’ve already made your mark. What’s the next chapter for Flo Rida?
Film.

You’ve crossed over into branding, fitness, fashion… what’s been the most rewarding business move you’ve made so far?
Celsius Energy Drink.

Are there any dream collabs still on your list?
I’m partners with an Arizona company SoulFast E Bikes. Stay tuned for our upcoming collaboration.

What’s something fans might not expect about you?
I’m the youngest of 8, the only boy, a twin and I have 7 sisters.

Do you have a daily ritual or mindset practice that keeps you grounded?
Prayer, read scripture and workout.

What’s your personal hype song?
“Break Every Chain” by Tasha Cobb.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten… and the hardest to follow?
“Be yourself.” “Everyone can’t come with you.”

Decades from now, what do you want people to say when they talk about Flo Rida (because they’ll surely still be listening to your songs)?
He was a humble guy who loved life, his family, his friends and his fans (whom I refer to as my family).

Working with Ke$ha on “Right Round”...did you sense she was about to take off?
Shout out to Ke$ha who is extremely down to earth and talented. I knew she would be a star.

Any dream collabs still on your list?
Beyonce, Money Long, 50 Cent, Paul McCartney.

What advice would you give your younger self… the one just starting out in Carol City?
Put God first and don’t let anyone deter you from your dream. Believe in yourself always.

Stick around after the D-backs game on Friday, Sept. 5 for a FREE postgame concert with Flo Rida, presented by Coors Light Birds Nest. Game ticket gets you in.
