FLM: Tell us about yourself and your connection to Fairfield.

Sam: I moved to Fairfield in 2020 to be closer to the University of Bridgeport, where I was completing my doctorate in chiropractic. After years of moving around, it is great to settle in a place that truly values health and fitness. Just walk up and down Post Road, and you can tell right away that people here take it seriously—that’s something you don’t see everywhere.

FLM: For those that haven’t discovered you yet, how would you describe Align Personal Training?

A: Align is the ultimate solution for healthspan optimization.  We take the best of personal training, manual therapy, clinical nutrition and provide a structured plan that aligns with your goals.  For example, in sports - we know speed is the name of the game.  If you are trying to make some heads turn in a short period of time we have the system to get you there.

FLM: What is your overall wellness philosophy? What is the ethos behind Align?

Sam: 20 years ago everyone was searching for the answer to the health & fitness test.  Now everyone has the answers.  The challenge isn’t what to do, but how to practically apply all this information in a structured way.  If more information was the solution there wouldn’t be so many adults suffering from a lack of energy, inconsistent nutrition, joint pain, limited lean muscle, and movement restrictions.

We believe that health precedes performance and have created a training system that reflects that.  Our system is built to address each of these through an all encompassing individualized approach.

FLM: Who is your typical client?

Sam:  Our typical client avatar is a fitness enthusiast in her 40s or 50s who’s dedicated years to fitness but is frustrated by lack of lean muscle, low energy, and has chronic nagging injuries like shoulder and hip pain.

She has done group fitness, personal training, and HIIT workouts but it hasn’t moved the needle. All the nutrition information out there has become confusing.  She has tried it all, but none have created lasting change.

Her doctor tells her that all her blood labs look good, but she knows there is something off.  She wants to add barbell and dumbbell training into her regimen, but isn’t sure where to start.  Her supplement counter is filled with all the latest and greatest options, but how is this actually impacting her body?

Motivation isn’t the problem, direction is.

FLM: How does Align stand out from other programs?

Sam:  Purchasing personal training is like buying a parachute, you don’t want to sacrifice quality.  We know the impact we can have on peoples lives and take it very seriously.  Our system offers unique continuity unheard of for the general population.  Our clinical modalities are used to drive up training performance and our training performance is influenced by clinical nutrition.

We don’t view these as separate entities but rather as part of our all encompassing approach.  Any doctor can hire a trainer or a nutritionist to check a box but rarely will you see the continuity that our system brings to the table to achieve an overarching goal.

FLM: What services do you provide and what can a client expect during their first visit?

Sam: We want to find out what each member is looking to achieve and help create a structured path so they can get there quickly and safely. Growing up I always felt rushed at the doctors office and I never want our members to have that impression.  The better questions we ask the better we can help our members.  It is important for us to figure out where we are right now so we can identify where we are going and where to start the journey. During our initial assessment we look at four components: History & Goals, Movement Analysis, Force Plate Evaluation and Metabolic Health Analysis.

FLM: What has been the biggest reward working with your clients and being a part of the community?

Sam:  People in Fairfield care about their health.  It has been awesome to take what I have learned for the past 16 years and empower members of this community with a skillset that will last a lifetime.

FLM: Any advice for those kicking off the New Year looking to start their fitness and health journey?

Sam: I love the Yogi Berra quote: “If you don’t know where you are going you might not get there.”  Everyone has motivation at the beginning of the year, but when that motivation isn’t as strong you need a structured plan to support your goals.
