Before going back to college to study computer information systems, Scott Harris worked in the construction industry. Then, in his last year of college, he took the summer off to build decks and fences to earn some extra cash. He did so well that he decided to get his contractor’s license.
In 2007, he founded Prestige Remodeling Solutions in Nashville, and today, he’s the owner of four different locations. “I couldn't see myself being a computer programmer for the rest of my life,” he says. “I like the creativity side of this business, seeing things come to life from a homeowner's imagination to actually getting it on a set of plans and seeing it realized.”
Prestige offers a wide range of services - from kitchen and bathroom remodeling to building sunrooms, garages, additions, and more. Scott’s team can perform all necessary tasks to create beautiful and functional homes.
Being successful in business for so long didn’t just happen. Scott’s always had plans in place to produce high-quality results. He knows that homeowners are often wary when it comes to hiring contractors because they frequently hear about or have had bad experiences. “I remember saying to my brother [Jon, his production manager] that in order to be the best, we have to have the mindset that we are the best.”
He and his team of project managers hold regular production meetings and conduct pre-site walkthroughs to ensure everyone is on the same page. “We have an engineer that we've worked with for years. We permit everything that requires a permit, and we always do things the right way and follow the correct path. It protects clients and also lets them know we’re a legitimate company.”
Clients are also part of a group text with estimators and project managers throughout every job, so there’s never a time when they’re going to be in the dark about anything. This communication, explains Scott, is one thing that sets the company apart.
“You want your homeowners to be engaged, you want them to be involved in the selection process because it makes them feel invested,” he says. He and his team also understand that some of the homeowners they work with have saved for years to complete a project, and they take that seriously.
Even with all the attention to detail, when it comes to remodeling and building, sometimes things don’t always go as planned. “It’s not a perfect process, and we always try to set that expectation that we're on this journey with them,” says Scott. “If something's not right, we're going to make it right.”
If an install were to fail two years down the road and it’s outside the warranty period, the client is usually out of luck. But not with Prestige. “If it were, say, a shower leak, which is so rare because of the products we use, and it’s clearly on us, we're going to fix it,” he says.
One of his most beloved projects is through the Department of Veterans Affairs. “It's called specialized adaptive housing, and the vets get grants to make their homes handicap accessible. We've been doing those since 2007, and it's probably my favorite part of what we do.”
When not working, another thing Scott wholeheartedly enjoys is spending time at his mini farm, located in the Mount Juliet area, with his menagerie of animals. “We have a little bit of everything, including four dogs and this crazy cat, Monster,” he says. “He totally runs things. I got him as a barn cat, but now he stays inside every night.”
Luckily, his talented interior designer/social media and marketing person, Molly Sharpe, also doubles as what he laughingly calls his “fur nanny” when he goes out of town.
