As you stroll through Greeley’s great parks or open areas this season, be sure to keep an eye out for our country’s national bird. This time of year, American Bald Eagles are prevalent in the Greeley area. The Bald Eagle, over several decades, has made an amazing come back from near extinction. In the mid 1970s, Colorado was home to only 3 known Bald Eagle nests, but today, they number over 200. Greeley is lucky to have several active nesting sites where these raptors return annually to nest and reproduce. Eagles can be seen flying, hunting, feeding, and engaging in their annual courtship activities. They can be seen flying the skies, sitting on frozen lakes, and perching in trees and on power poles for the next few months. It is a special time of the year for us in Greeley to witness these great raptors, so be sure to bundle up, grab a warm beverage, and a camera and head out to the Poudre River Trail to observe Greeley’s great winter wildlife in all its glory.
