Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Redeemer Day School (RDS) in Atlanta provides a unique, Christ-centered education that not only nurtures young minds but also supports entire families in their parenting journey. Founded after the closure of The Heiskell School, Redeemer emerged from the passionate dedication of educators who refused to let their unique ministry end.
The school's mission is clear: to provide a Christ-centered, teacher-directed, academically challenging environment while mentoring parents in Christ-centered child-rearing. The school's approach is deeply rooted in Biblical principles, beginning each day with devotion and prayer among staff members. Students start their mornings with an assembly that includes pledges to the American and Christian flags, scripture recitation, and songs of faith and patriotism. This routine sets the tone for a day where Biblical truths are woven into every aspect of learning.
The impact of this Christ-centered approach is evident in the lives of the students. As one parent, Janelle Laing, shares, "My children are growing in their faith daily and learning to set a firm foundation for their morals and values. The positive and encouraging, yet disciplined, approach at Redeemer Day School has influenced my children in countless ways - they love others well and cheer them on and are learning to handle disappointments with grace."
What sets RDS apart is not just its focus on students but also its commitment to mentoring parents. The school employs a Director of Parent Mentoring, Jeannie Brostrand, who provides one-on-one support, leads a weekly book club, and writes a "Mentoring Moment" column. The school also organizes Coffee & Learns and speaking events to address various parenting topics.
This support has been crucial for many families. Kathryn Root, another RDS parent, notes, "The teachers and staff at Redeemer are a source of encouragement, wisdom and advice for my husband and me. There are official events organized by the school to help parents tackle everything from potty training to technology."
Academically, RDS maintains a challenging yet developmentally appropriate curriculum. The school's emphasis on phonics and traditional teaching methods has proven effective, preparing students well for elementary school. The intentionally small size of the school allows for a personalized approach where each student is truly known and nurtured.
The founding of RDS is a story of determination and faith. When the Heiskell School closed, five of its dedicated teachers took on the challenge of starting a new school: Jenny Kwon, Pat Reynolds, Page Whitfield, Cheryl LeBlanc, and Connie Heiskell. They were aided by the help and encouragement of Heiskell parents, including Lori Holsinger (serving as Founding Board Chair) and Amber Vestal (serving as an assistant). Despite having no prior experience in establishing a school or business, their faith and the trust of families helped RDS flourish.
Looking ahead to the next decade, RDS remains committed to its founding principles. The school plans to continue honoring the legacy of the Heiskell School while staying true to its values and traditional teaching methods. RDS prides itself on fostering a close-knit community where families and teachers are like-minded and connected.
As RDS celebrates its first decade, it stands as a testament to the power of faith-based education and community support. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a respected institution, Redeemer Day School continues to fulfill its mission of providing a Christ-centered education that prepares children not just academically, but spiritually and emotionally for the challenges ahead. The school's commitment to both student education and parent mentoring creates a well-rounded approach to child development, making RDS a unique and valuable resource in the Atlanta educational landscape.
