Hair Extensions 101

Owner of Salon and Co. in West Bloomfield answers some common questions about hair extensions.

McKenzie Oha

Owner of Salon and Co. in West Bloomfield

Located at 4811 Haggerty Road in West Bloomfield, Salon and Co. specializes in everything-hair— from haircuts to hair color and more! However, owner McKenzie Oha said the salon’s most popular service is, by far, hair extensions; in fact, she said she has done more hair extension services alone this year than she has in her seven years as a licensed hairdresser! For those curious or debating, she took the time this month to answer some common hair extension questions for us.

WHY THE RISE IN POPULARITY?

They’ve become more of an affordable service and more time-efficient. I also think people are understanding how much more accessible they are and how low-maintenance they’ve become.

WHAT TYPE OF EXTENSIONS DO YOU OFFER?

We offer a ton of different methods in hair extensions. Our favorite method (which my entire staff has been trained and certified in) is a sew-in volume weft. They take about an hour to install and the hair brand we use (Bellami) has lasted some of our clients an entire year before having to purchase new ones.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN THEM?

Maintaining them is super easy: you wash them like you’d wash your own hair, blow dry and style like normal! We always send our guests home with retail included, so we know they have the right product to maintain them at home. Before bed, we recommend brushing and putting your hair in a loose braid. As for color, we can always color them darker. Typically they come matched, or we custom color them to blend perfectly and tone them if they start getting brassy from the sun or swimming pool.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU HAVE TO MOVE THEM UP?

Every 6-8 weeks. We typically move them up at the same appointment as your color service. It takes about 15 minutes.

WHO DO YOU RECOMMEND HAIR EXTENSIONS FOR?

We think anyone’s a candidate for hair extensions! However, anyone who’s always swimming should keep in mind that the chemicals don’t react to the hair and tend to dry them out, like your normal hair would!
