Hair Loss Causes
Family history, or heredity, seems to be a major factor, but the exact pattern is unclear. Other factors, such as nutritional deficiencies, stress, aging, hormonal fluctuations, drug use and certain biological issues (thyroid problems), also play a part.
A hormonal condition known as androgenic alopecia, also known as male pattern baldness, is the primary cause of hair loss. It’s due to the increased action of androgens, or hormones, such as testosterone (and the highly hair-destructive dihydrotestosterone), that drive development of male characteristics. Androgenic alopecia progresses predictably, forming an “M” shape at the top of the forehead as the hairline recedes. It also involves a thinning/loss of hair at the crown of the head.

As each strand of hair emerges from the follicle, it begins a growth cycle that generally continues for several years. Next, it enters a resting phase, then eventually falls out during its shedding phase, with a new hair ready to take its place.
But hair loss, like the type caused by an androgen imbalance, can wreak havoc with this process. It shortens the growth cycle and leads to progressively thinner, weaker strands of hair and, eventually, the death of the follicle.
