For Damien Olsen, a self-described serial entrepreneur with an "ADHD type of personality" and a constant desire to "learn, do, and make more," that need was a luxury grooming space for men. His solution? Hammer & Nails, a unique barber shop and grooming lounge he recently opened in Herriman.
Olsen's approach to business is simple: identify a niche based on a personal interest, often looking for a service or product he personally needs. He noticed that traditional nail salons were simply not inviting for men who wanted services like manicures and pedicures. This recognition led him to fill a significant market gap, establishing an environment with services specifically tailored to male clientele.
The vision for Hammer & Nails is a community retreat. Olsen sees a destination where men can find a "reprieve from the day-to-day hustle and bustle of life." This isn't just a quick stop for a trim; it’s a thoughtfully designed sanctuary. The rooms are windowless with dim lighting to ensure total privacy. Every service, from haircuts and scalp massages to hand and foot treatments, comes with personal entertainment: a large 55-inch TV and noise-canceling headphones. The focus remains strictly on grooming and natural nail care.
A key part of Olsen’s strategy is also generational. He wants to invite fathers to bring their sons for a cut or a first grooming experience.
Aside from regular appointments, Olsen plans to host watch parties for sporting events. He's also developing options for groomsmen or bachelor parties, where the entire space could be closed to the public for private catering and services.
Hammer & Nails is designed to be a comfortable destination, a place where members can drop by to hang out, grab a drink, and watch sports in the lounge even when they aren't there for a scheduled service.
