Living in Colorado, we’re lucky to have train tracks leading to some magical holiday experiences. There’s something nostalgic about trains this time of year, especially when the journey takes you through historic towns with views of our incredible snow-dusted mountains. It’s one of those things that makes living in the West a little more special. This November, Colorado has an especially memorable sight to look forward to. The Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 and Living Legend No. 844 return to the rails together for a holiday tour.

On November 21, the two locomotives are scheduled to travel from Greely to Denver, with a free public stop and display at Union Station in Denver later that afternoon. Big Boy is the world’s largest operating steam locomotive, while No. 844 is the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific that has never been permanently retired. Seeing these two historic engines together is a rare opportunity for train enthusiasts and families.

For more holiday train experiences, head west from Arvada toward Golden and Georgetown, where railroad history meets seasonal magic. In Golden, the Colorado Railroad Museum offers a closer look at the locomotives and stories that helped shape our state. During November and December, you can enjoy The Polar Express™ Train Ride, with theatrical performances, cookies, and hot chocolate on a journey aboard vintage coaches pulled by a steam locomotive. It’s the kind of experience that becomes a family holiday tradition year after year.

Continue west to Georgetown for the iconic Georgetown Loop Railroad for a scenic ride between Georgetown and Silver Plume. This route is another great way to experience Colorado’s railroad history and the historic mountain towns along the way.

From legendary locomotives to a magical ride to the North Pole, there is plenty to discover along Colorado’s rails this season. So, from Arvada, head west, follow the tracks, and find a little holiday magic worth returning to year after year.
