Complementary healthcare methods are termed Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). This can be confusing because these methods aren’t truly medicine as we know it. They CAN often accomplish the same things as medicines (make you feel better, lighten your mood, ease pain, calm worry and more). CAM focuses on the patient's preferences, emotions, and the mental, physical, and spiritual aspects of health.

Integrative medicine combines conventional medicine with CAM practices that have been shown through science to be safe and effective. As in most lines of work, the effectiveness is usually dependent upon the experience and training of the person using the technique and not always the technique itself. CAM is not a replacement for a doctor’s care; it helps support traditional medicine.
