The shop offers a curated selection of new and used literary fiction, guidebooks and ever-changing staff picks,  hot coffee and tea, plus cozy chairs and an upstairs meeting nook for gathering. Below, owner Tom Bean shares some of his favorite titles on the topics of home, hearth and family. DudleysBookshopCafe.com

Upstream: Selected Essays

By Mary Oliver

“For a lot of us in Central Oregon, ‘home’ is really found in the outdoors,” says Bean. If that’s you, this collection of essays from celebrated poet Mary Oliver will help you appreciate how lucky we are to live where we do, he says. (Editor’s note: Oliver passed away Jan. 17, 2018.)

Hearth: A Global Conversation on Identity, Community, and Place

Edited by Annick Smith and Susan O’Connor

“Hearth” can mean different things to different people. Bean says, “This excellent multicultural collection shows us that, in the end, it’s a pretty primal idea we all share. Even in a chaotic world, hearth is a place of warmth and comfort. A place we need to return to again and again.”

Only Love Can Break Your Heart

By Ed Tarkington

Reflecting on the topic of family, Bean says, “There are so many great fictional families in literature but this is an under-the-radar staff favorite.” It’s a coming-of-age story in 1970s Virginia wrapped in a mystery, but it’s so much more, he says. “The prose is pitch-perfect and the characters are all too real. Sometimes you’ll love them and sometimes you won’t, but hey, that’s how families work.”
