EMERGENCY DENTAL TREATMENTS
"We understand dental emergencies can be scary, and will do our best to help you stay calm and informed," agrees Dr. Skousen. "If you're in doubt, call our office to discuss your concerns, no matter how small they seem."
He says patients have dental emergencies due to broken or chipped teeth, toothaches, missing teeth and excessive bleeding from the gums or mouth.
Dr. Skousen says he loves dentistry and prides himself in building trust, and helping patients overcome dental fear and anxiety. He grew up in Ohio and became a Texas transplant via his wife, who went to Allen High School. He received his bachelor's degree in business management with a minor in chemistry from Brigham Young University-Idaho. He then received his D.D.S. degree from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. He's a member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Texas Academy of General Dentistry, Texas Dental Association and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
He says he gained a special compassion for patients through volunteer experiences before and during dental school. During his undergraduate studies, he volunteered in Nicaragua as a dental assistant to provide dental care for 500-plus teens and young adults. He says that experience solidified his desire to become a dentist. He completed externships in underserved, special needs communities of Ohio.
ACCIDENT-RELATED DENTAL NEEDS
"If you're playing a contact sport or you're in an accident and lose a tooth, don’t panic. If your tooth is still attached to your gums, gently push it back into place if possible. Do not force the tooth in place, this could damage the gums and the nerves, making it difficult for our team to save the tooth," says Dr. Skousen.
"After an accident, if your tooth is not attached to your gums, gently wipe it off and try to place it back in its spot. Similarly, do not scrub dirt off the tooth because you could damage the delicate nerves. Lastly, if your tooth does not fit back into place, put it in a jar or bag of milk," he adds. "Your tooth has the highest chance of being saved if you get to the dentist within 30 minutes to 1 hour."
Is a toothache considered a dental emergency? Dr. Skousen says a deep infection or large decay could be irritating the inner nerves of the tooth causing pain. "If you have a toothache, brush and floss right away. Many times, food stuck in-between teeth can cause immense pain. If the pain doesn't subside after you gently brush and floss, you may have a toothache dental emergency," he adds.
