Our homes are more than just places to live—they're environments that have a profound impact on our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. From the quality of light to the air we breathe, indoor spaces play a critical role in shaping our health.
Wolfworks, a team of mission-driven architects and builders, is dedicated to creating homes that are not only energy-efficient but promote the health of occupants. By prioritizing features that improve air quality, temperature regulation, and natural light, they help homeowners experience a healthier, more sustainable way of living.
Cleaner Air: The Power of Air Tightness and Ventilation
Traditional homes often have air leakage, allowing dust, allergens, and outdoor pollutants to enter. High-performance homes prevent this by creating an airtight building envelope, which helps keep unwanted pollutants outside while maintaining consistent indoor temperatures.
Wolfworks performs a series of tests to assess interior air tightness —whether it’s a new build or renovation. For remodels, Wolfworks establishes a baseline by testing air leakage, and developing a plan to seal gaps and improve insulation. This ensures that the home’s mechanical systems work efficiently, reducing energy cost and usage.
For new construction, multiple blower door tests are performed during the building process to identify air leaks before they are hidden behind walls. If a home achieves a high level of air tightness, Wolfworks recommends installing a Mechanical Ventilation system like an Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV). An ERV works by exchanging stale indoor air with fresh, filtered outdoor air, while recovering heat from the outgoing air to preheat the incoming air.
This balanced ventilation system improves indoor air quality and helps maintain comfortable temperatures and humidity levels—especially important for those with respiratory conditions like asthma or allergies.
Fossil Fuel Free Future: Combustion-Free Homes
Another significant factor in a high-performance home is eliminating harmful combustion by-products. Gas appliances, oil heating systems, and other fossil-fuel-powered devices release pollutants like carbon monoxide, particulates, and moisture into the home.
Wolfworks is committed to creating all-electric homes that are free from combustion-based systems, replacing traditional heating methods with energy-efficient heat pumps for both heating and cooling. Induction ranges and cooktops are also recommended as replacements to gas ranges.
By making the shift to all-electric homes, Wolfworks reduces indoor air pollution while improving energy efficiency. And for homeowners looking to further reduce their carbon footprint, solar power is often incorporated to generate clean energy, reducing electricity costs and benefiting both your mental well-being.
Natural Light
Providing natural light and views that elevate our mood is another critical job our homes should provide. Spaces that support personal and social well-being, along with being well lit can reduce stress, improve sleeping habits, and increase alertness and cognition.
Wolfworks homes integrate natural light in a way that enhances the aesthetics and health of spaces. Large windows and strategically placed openings create seamless connections between the indoors and outdoors, allowing sunlight to flood rooms.
Environmental Responsibility: Building for a Better Future
High-performance homes are also about aligning with environmental sustainability. Wolfworks is deeply committed to minimizing its impact on the planet by using responsible building practices, sustainable materials, and energy-efficient systems. Their approach to design and construction not only reduces a home’s carbon footprint but also ensures long-term health benefits for occupants.
“When we show people the homes we design and build, we hope they leave thinking ‘Why isn’t every home built this way?’” says co-owner Kyle Cruz.
By focusing on air quality, energy efficiency, and natural light, high-performance homes create a living environment that enhances the health of their occupants while reducing environmental impact.
