Tackling clients' interior design needs has delighted Melanie Piper for the past 23 years. "I love what I'm doing, meeting new people and making design processes as fun as they can be. I work with all styles, bringing both practicality and zest to projects, after I get to know the personalities and lifestyles of my clients. Gaining friends along the way is the greatest gift."
She says most people or business managers seeking to remodel spaces vocalize the desire for results to be "timeless." This is one reason she confirms she deliberately designs so rooms aren't out-of-date within a few years.
One step she says to avoid is placing too much of one color in "main hangouts."
Because home design can be overwhelming to many people, Melanie suggests clients collect examples of colors, light fixtures, furniture, tile, fabric swatches and floor samples they like. She also asks for pictures of actual rooms and spaces even before she's on-site so she can begin her vision of possibilities.
"Many times, people are afraid their preferences won't look good, and they'd like validation. Other times, they don't really know what they want, so we collaborate on approaches," she says.
This year, Melanie says she's getting voluminous requests for blue and green rooms or accessories, particularly in bathrooms and kitchens. "These colors are fresh, like blue sky and green grass, yet also a little beachy. We're still incorporating earth tones but not in dominant ways. Taupe is good because it goes with everything, and I like to accentuate with black."
Based from Melanie's Bargersville home office, she's built a regional business mainly through referrals. "It often starts with jazzing up one room, which leads to renewing other aspects. I'm like a kid in a candy store; I really want clients to be excited about their homes or offices," she explains.
