As soon as the turkey comes out of the oven and snow begins to cover the ground, it’s time once again to begin those beloved holiday traditions. Gathering with loved ones and enjoying the food and activities we’ve all missed so much is important now, more than ever. One thing a pandemic didn’t stop is the ritual of sitting around the fire, sipping hot cocoa or a seasonal cocktail and watching a holiday movie. Whether it’s a cheery Hallmark movie, comedy, animation or foreign film you haven’t seen before, holiday movies never disappoint us. With familiar cinematic themes, great holiday films channel the spirit of the season, give a unique perspective, and celebrate the world’s traditions. While it’s difficult to narrow a list down to three, we’ve definitely made our list and checked it twice! Watching a classic film like It’s a Wonderful Life or White Christmas reminds us that holiday films have been popular themes in filmmaking since the golden age. Movies such as National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and ELF set the bar for modern holiday comedies. Satires, dark comedies and foreign dramas with holiday themes and tales of old gained popularity in the mid 80s and have stood the test of time. Here's a short holiday list:
A Christmas Story (1983)
Based on the writings of author Jean Shepherd, this beloved holiday movie follows the exploits of Ralphie Parker who spends most of his time dodging a school bully and dreaming of his ideal Christmas gift, a Red Ryder air rifle.
Fanny and Alexander (1982)
Directed by Ingmar Bergman, this film follows two children whose mother remarries a strict bishop after their father dies. Set during Christmas, this film is visually stunning and as well as emotional.
Scrooged (1988)
In this modern take on a Christmas Carol, a television executive, Frank Cross (Bill Murray) has driven away the love of his life with his behavior. With a visit from three ghosts, Frank is given a chance to right the wrongs of his past.
