“It all started with a phone number I found in the office trash can,” recalls John Stewart, Sunfare’s CEO and co-founder. It was 1997 and Stewart was running a small nutrition consulting business in Los Angeles with Sunfare President and Co-founder Carl Ferro. When he learned the number had been discarded with no follow-up, he made a return call and found himself talking to Kimberly di Bonaventura, then wife of Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who was the president of feature films for Warner Bros. She wanted someone to make healthy meals for Lorenzo and his friend, Joel Silver.
“Even though it was something we didn’t do—actually making and delivering the meals, which is now our entire model—it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up,” offers Ferro.
And when di Bonaventura and Silver both enjoyed the food and slimmed down, news of the fledgling company spread quickly through the industry.
“I got a page early on from someone named Sandy Bullock. When I reached out to speak with her, only then did I realize it was actually Sandra Bullock. Our sixth client! Mind blown,” says Stewart, laughing.
