Holy Yoga

Destress and Deep Breaths

"Yoga is well known for its amazing strengthening and toning benefits, but it is equally beneficial for reducing stress. Studies speak to how practicing this ancient series of stretches and poses along with mindful breathing helps to reduce anxiety and lower stress almost instantly," says Jen Moye, Marketing Director for Holy Yoga.

"Holy Yoga is for everyone and every body. No matter where you come from– if you've been practicing for years, never tried yoga before, aren't physically fit, worry that you aren't bendy enough or are overweight– you just have to show up on your mat and simply be there and present in the moment. We are different from a lot of other places. We don't want you to feel like you have to have it all together to come. We believe yoga is a beautiful conduit to let God do His work if you allow Him to," says Jen. "The goal in our community is that everyone would find a safe place to belong."

Much like traditional Eastern yoga, Holy Yoga's practice incorporates the essential elements of yoga: breathing, meditation and physical poses with Christ as the focus of worship for those who are open to that. Yoga is the perfect practice for anyone who desires to slow down and be fully present and, especially so, for a bride on her special day or a stressed-out mother of the bride.

We all know how stressful the wedding day can be. A pre-wedding mini-yoga session with the bride and her bridesmaids could be the answer to minimizing that anxiety and getting off on the right foot. Utilizing yoga techniques that calm and bring perspective are great tools to have in your toolbox.

There are things that happen, mentally, physically and emotionally, when you physically slow down breathing by taking deep, intentional breaths. The result is reduced stress and a clearer, more focused mind. Who couldn't use that every day but, especially on your wedding day? HolyYoga.net

Pose 1: Standing Forward Fold

Standing, take a deep breath in and as you breathe out, slowly lower the top half of your body towards the ground, moving your torso towards your thighs. Notice how you surrender your anxiety, worries and cares.

Pose 2: Easy Seated Pose

Seated, with legs crossed or not. Sit up tall and in a posture in which you are still and comfortable. Notice your breath coming in and out of your nostrils. Simply observe your breath for a moment.

Pose 3: Extended Child's Pose

Sitting on your calves (buttocks on feet), take a deep breath in, raising your hands overhead. Fold forward into extended child’s pose. Rest here for as long as you need to being mindful of your breathing.

Pose 4: Reclining Bound Angle

Lie on your back and bring the soles of your feet together. Place cushions underneath your knees or hips for additional support if desired. Gently place one hand on your stomach area and one hand on your heart, as you begin to focus on your breath. Not judging it or trying to change it- simply notice the exchange of breath on your inhale and exhale. You can make it more of a heart opener by placing a block or rolled-up blanket under your back.
