When October arrives, Josh trades legal documents for constructing an ever-evolving Halloween spectacle in his front yard.
The tradition began six years ago, for a very personal reason.
“I never really celebrated Halloween growing up, so this is my way to give my children an extreme Halloween,” he explains.
Since then, the display has become an annual creative challenge.
“I like to do something new every year. I’ve developed skills in lighting, sounds, projections, animatronics, and woodworking. I have a commercial-grade fog machine that smokes the whole street for a spooky feel.”
The neighborhood has become part of the tradition, too.
“It’s great to see neighborhood children come by as I’m working on it,” he says.
“Lots of people say their kids make them drive by nearly every day to see what new things I add as I build the display. I have the display up the first weekend of October, so it runs all month long, but it definitely has better lights/sounds on the weekends.”
For Josh, the best part is about more than the decorations.
“I want to give my kids great memories of having fun around the holidays. Hopefully one of them sticks with my tradition and also goes crazy for Halloween.”
That spirit extends beyond his own family.
“I enjoy bringing the community together,” says Josh.
“I hear from friends that their neighborhoods in Yorba Linda and Placentia have no children trick-or-treating, while we consistently get 300+ children every year.
