Hosting an outdoor dinner party is a great way to bring people together this time of the year. Here are a few things I do when hosting and creating a pretty, yet effortless, tablescape.
Layer in Texture and Color
Adding a tablecloth, a table runner, or placemats can bring in texture, especially on a plain outdoor table. Linen or woven materials work well for summer, and napkins are a fun way to add a pop of color.
Center Piece
To fill the empty space in the middle of your table, add a centerpiece. This gives it a focal point and ties everything together.
Try using a wooden tray filled with fresh fruit, along with sprigs of rosemary for a touch of greenery and fragrance. I love how it brings warmth and texture without being overly formal.
Add Small Details
Small details go a long way. Things like glass carafes filled with fresh fruit, such as cucumber and lemon water. This adds a refreshing option that your guests can easily access, while the fresh fruit adds flavor and another pop of color to the table. You can also sit mini potted succulents around the table to create a layered look with your linens. These simple touches will add personality and make the setup feel intentional.
Lighting
Even if it's not dark outside, lighting can play a key part in creating an ambience. String lights are a great addition to your outdoor area. Rechargeable table lamps are also an excellent option for giving off a warm, cozy glow without needing an outlet.
Music
I like to create a music playlist ahead of time that fits the vibe of the night—something like soft jazz, acoustic sounds, or even a touch of French café music. If you're using a Bluetooth speaker, keep the volume low so it blends into the background to make everything feel more relaxed.
Hosting is one of my love languages, and I’m convinced it doesn’t have to be complicated to be meaningful.
