Summer is the perfect time for home improvement projects, both inside and outside. Through hardscaping, the solid design elements of the yard, a cracked sidewalk, or a slanted driveway can be replaced with clean geometrical pavers as an eye-catching trail to the front door. A dilapidated patio can be transformed with architectural stonework into a magical outdoor oasis to while away summer afternoons.
Concrete offers value-boosting aesthetics ranging from simple garden planters to complex architectural accents and offers a sense of safety with its strength and durability. Some colonial-style homes feature tall vertical columns while Spanish-inspired ranch homes favor raised patio decks or planters with brick accents. The sound of gentle water splash from a statuary fountain is a delightful accent for a modern or contemporary yard.
Here we featured a total remodel of a backyard patio with pool, spa, deck, an outdoor fireplace, and a concrete slab onto which an outdoor bathroom was built (not shown). The deck was poured into squares to reduce the incidence of cracking as land settles over time and leads excess water to drain. Rounded bullnose steps lead to the spa and raised patio lounge area which appears smooth when approached from the front yet angular when viewed from the side. Rough stone masonry bordering the semi-circular spa form a waterfall which empties into the pool, the pleasant sound of which carries all the way into the back rooms of the home.
