What gave you the idea to start Wiener von Braun’s?
We moved from Chicago in 2022 and were looking for a good dog spot. Knowing the history of our new city, and my love of a good pun, I said ‘Someone should just open a joint here called ‘Wiener von Braun’s’ It was a running joke for six months until I thought, ‘Ya know, I’m going to jump on this before someone else does!’
What hot dog expertise do you bring to Huntsville?
While culinary skills didn’t run deep in the Farrell household growing up, Portillo’s did cater a lot of family dinners. Hot dogs were essentially one of the basic food groups we were raised on.
Tell us about your flavors and why you chose them for your menu.
I wanted to keep the menu as tight as possible while providing the best ingredients. Our chili is homemade, our relish is homemade, and our Bavarian pretzels are overnighted bi-weekly from a mom & pop joint out of Milwaukee.
What’s your favorite hot dog?
If it’s over 80 degrees the Chicago Dog, under 80 we’re going with Chili Dog.
What condiment can you not live without?
I have to say our Aunt Ginny’s Green Tomato Relish… it’s a family recipe we found in our Great Aunt Ginny’s cookbook. I initially was putting it on steak, scrambled eggs, and thought, ‘this would be great on a dog’.
What is your favorite summer memory related to hot dogs??
5th grade… the boys and I would come back to our house after playing a quick 9 in our junior golf league for some pool basketball. Mom would have some dogs boiled up and ice cold Dr. Peppers in the fridge. We were living like kings.
