How to Style a Bookshelf

Home Decor Tips from Amy Tinnin with A Cup Full of Sass

An empty bookshelf can sometimes feel intimidating. It’s easy to overthink and not know where to begin. These styling tips are ones I use when decorating my shelves.

1. Start with Books

A great place to start is by stacking books both vertically and horizontally to add interest and create a spot for layering.

2. Family Photos

Framed family photos make a shelf feel more personal and lived-in. It tells a bit of your story, which reflects real life. I like to add photos to a stack of books.

3. Use Decorative Objects

Bowls, vases, or sculptural accents bring texture and shape without cluttering the space. A small potted plant or faux greenery also adds warmth to the look.

4. Framed Art

A framed piece of art adds depth and makes the shelf feel more complete. It works well with simple pieces, such as bowls or stacked books.

Once styled, step back and see how it flows. Don’t be afraid to rearrange until it feels right. Styling is a process.
