Il Freno Espresso Bar

Time for a Coffee “Brake”

Four years ago, Tracy Grotz realized she had extra space on the lower level of Cyclesport, the bicycle shop she owns with her husband. After “brewing” about it a bit, she partnered with Marissa Riario to open Il Freno Espresso Bar. (The words "Il Freno" refer to a bicycle brake in Italian).

The shop was originally a draw for the cyclists who meet for rides. “Although it adjoins the bike store, we didn’t want it perceived as a place for cyclists,” says Tracy. “As we grew, we gained a nice following with customers from Park Ridge, Montvale, Hillsdale, and Woodcliff Lake,” adds Marissa.

The espresso bar serves matcha, cold brew, and lattes. Coffee “purists” love the regular coffee they carry. “We get it from a family-owned business and grind it ourselves,” says Tracy. “It’s very popular.”

Il Freno features locally-sourced muffins, scones, and raspberry bars as well as baked goods from Balthazar and Sans (gluten-free) on the weekends.

I’m amazed about where this business has gone and the success we've seen. We've met great people in the community. I hope everyone enjoys visiting us for some good coffee and great customer service.
