In the Kitchen with the Kids

Picnics, tailgates, and eating on the road are all possible, even with food sensitivities and allergies.

Meet the Chung family, an active homeschooling family who love being outdoors! But when they discovered their children’s food allergies, well, eating out was out of the question. They turned this food challenge into an adventure by making their own versions of family favorites, and involving the kids in every step, at home and on the road.

Q: How do you deal with your children’s food allergies and sensitivities?

A: Involving the kids in every aspect of food is crucial to get them to try and enjoy healthy options. We have a small garden we started from seed which we care for and create recipes with. When we discovered the food allergies, we talked about what happened in their body and then made it a bit of an adventure to make alternatives. Our kiddos love to be scientists and taste-testers! Growing food, cooking it, experimenting with it, and enjoying it together are a part of our family culture.

Q: What are the best storage containers for food on-the-go?

A: We love Hydro flasks and Klean Canteens, Thermos Funtainers, and LunchBots. They are reusable, easy to clean, won't leak, and are travel and kid tested with no waste, no fuss.

Q: What advice do you have for parents who have children with food allergies?

A: Get the whole family involved in some way, whether choosing a recipe, gardening or shopping, slicing or stirring, and include your kiddos as much as possible. For a deeper look into homeschooling life, check out “Conscious Family Project” at allyadairchung.com.
