Where Fitness and Community Meet

The challenge to prioritize health and fitness is not lost on Paula Hensley, co-owner of Zones Gym. She knows all about the obstacles. That’s why she developed a gym that appeals on all levels.

“At its core, Zones Gym is defined by three pillars,” she says. “An uncompromising standard of cleanliness and presentation; expert-led, small group training with an emphasis on proper form and progression; and a fully integrated approach to recovery and performance.”

Together, she explains, these elements create an environment that feels both elevated and approachable, where excellence is expected, but never intimidating.

Zones Gym opened in Milford just over a year ago. Paula has spent her life in Greater Cincinnati, and Zones Gym cofounder Ryan Hensley, Paula’s daughter-in-law, relocated from Columbus after serving in the Peace Corps. Their combined perspectives—deep local roots paired with broader life experience—inform the gym’s balance of community and sophistication.

Zones Gym is shaped, Paula says, by “two distinct but highly complementary paths.” She brings more than two decades of entrepreneurial experience to the table, having owned and successfully exited multiple businesses, including a restoration company she operated with her husband. Meanwhile, Ryan’s background “reflects both discipline and purpose,” she shares—”first as a collegiate soccer athlete, then as a Peace Corps volunteer whose service was cut short by the pandemic and later as an environmental biologist with the EPA.”

Paula points out that the idea for Zones Gym came to them from a shared realization.

“There was an absence of an adults-only fitness environment that felt both elevated and genuinely supportive,” she explains.

“Traditional gyms often felt impersonal or, at times, intimidating, particularly for those seeking guidance in strength training or returning from injury,” Paula adds. “Zones was conceived as an alternative–an environment where members feel confident, comfortable and cared for. There is a particular sensitivity to the experience of women in fitness spaces, while still maintaining a welcoming, coed atmosphere.”

Zones further distinguishes itself with a seamless integration of fitness and recovery programs. Its Recovery Zone, for example, offers a private infrared sauna and cold plunge suites, red light therapy and massage pods—all of which can be reserved via a convenient smartphone app. Additionally, a dedicated Zen studio provides space for yoga and Pilates, while the training floor features state-of-the-art equipment arranged with both function and flow in mind.

Membership at Zones Gym has grown over the past year to approximately 250.

“That growth was with intention, rather than scale,” Paula says.

The Zones style is an emphasis on cultivating a community which values quality, consistency and a more refined approach to wellness.

“This measured growth allows for a more personalized experience—one where members are recognized, supported and never lost in the crowd,” she says.

Looking ahead, Zones Gym is actively exploring collaborations with local professionals, including physical therapists and wellness providers. The intention is to create a more comprehensive ecosystem—one where fitness, recovery and expert care intersect seamlessly.

“At Zones, we’ve created more than a place to work out. We’ve created an environment where wellness becomes part of a lifestyle,” Paula says. “It’s intentionally designed, deeply personal and built around consistency. Our goal is not just to help people feel better in the moment, but to support how they live, move and feel for years to come.”
