No matter what part of life’s journey one is on, the leaders of Tigrett & Pennington Insurance, beginning in 1983, made sure clients received the special attention required for their insurance needs. Donald Ray Pennington (D.R.) bought out his partner, Hamilton Parks Tigrett Jr., in 1991, with the roots of the company dating to 1933 when it was launched as Tigrett and Shibley Insurance.
While attending college, D.R. already was working with Mr. Tigrett, which led him to change his degree from engineering to finance. They shared a client-focused approach to service, and D.R. even became a licensed insurance agent before graduating. So, when D.R. graduated in 1983, he joined Mr. Tigrett full time. They kicked off Tigrett & Pennington Insurance, and together continued building an insurance agency that maintained exceptional levels of service.
An interesting side note is that Mr. Tigrett’s cousin, Isaac Tigrett, co-founded the Hard Rock Café and House of Blues, so the agency insured the popular cafe-music-museum restaurant back in the early 1980s. "It was interesting getting a call to secure coverage for Evis Presley’s outfits or various other famous autographed instruments that would be on display at the restaurants locations,” recalls D.R.
D.R. respected Mr. Tigrett “Parks” so much, even though no blood relation, he became the namesake of his son, Parks Pennington, who now is president/CEO for Tigrett & Pennington Inc. The agency offers business insurance, home and property plans, auto insurance, recreational insurance and life insurance.

The agency has grown from one office to a multi-state organization with seven locations in Tennessee and Kentucky. TPI Tips For Preparing Insurance Cover During Winter
- Insure Home Renovations: If summer weather prompted home improvements, re-examine your insurance policy before harsh winter weather hits. Depending on the type of improvement, it may not be covered under your existing policy. Before the renovation has to stand up against its first winter, check with your agent and make sure your costly project is protected with the right coverage.
- Double-Check Your Automobile Policy: It’s no surprise car accidents are more likely to occur in the winter. Check your auto policy to make sure your coverage is ready to handle claims for liability and collision. Consider checking the boat or RV insurance policies, too. If you usually discontinue or downgrade your summer fun policies in the winter, make sure these vehicles are secured from theft and fire as much as possible. Talk to your agent about where you store your boat or RV to determine your biggest risk factors.
- Account For An Increase In Personal Property: If recent trips included purchases, such as exotic artwork, antiques or jewelry, you'll want to evaluate your personal property policy to make sure it has enough coverage to protect new, one-of-a-kind items.
