Reading Circles Promote Education and Activism for Today’s Climate

Look to the sky and we see both infinite possibilities and the overwhelm of a universe larger than ourselves. In the anthology “All We Can Save: Truth, Courage and Solutions for the Climate Crisis,” out September 2020, editors Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Dr. Katharine K. Wilkinson provide framework to explore the magnitude of the climate crisis while grounding it firmly on earth. The book compiles almost 60 essays and poems by female scientists, artists, policymakers, and activists whose experiences professionally and personally across race, age, and geography present this complex subject to teach and inspire action. The book also provides resources for Reading Circles: a book club over ten weeks, designed with generous questions to provoke discussion. One local Circle meets twice per month over Zoom from locations in Bend, Seattle, Maui and Los Angeles. Differing landscapes and personal challenges are shared as entry points into personal climate conversations. The book reinforces that we all have a responsibility and opportunity to do our small part to create a healthier, more equitable planet. Dr. Wilkinson writes, “In some ways, we, humans, were not designed for a crisis this massive and all-encompassing.” Yet she, and the book offer hope. “From a foundation of science and community, we must imagine the future we want to live in…and every day do something to reel the dream closer to reality.”

(Sept. 2020, $29)

The anthology “All We Can Save” brings together scientists, poets, activists, artists, policymakers and dreamers, from multiple races, generations and parts of the world, to help advance a more representative and solution-oriented approach to the climate crisis. The collection of female writers offers inspiration, and understanding to provoke action with an intersection of ideas.

Reading Circles

Climate scholars Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and Dr. Katharine K. Wilkinson began their book project to bring more voices into the conversation about climate, but realized it was only the beginning when it came to solutions. Their Reading Circles invite small groups to discuss a section of the book each week. They provide reading guides, facilitation questions and additional resources for groups to connect, nourish and seed action work.
