The Artful Path of Alicia Chimento

For artist Alicia Chimento, creativity has never followed a straight line. Instead, it has evolved through seasons of life, shaped by experience, renewal and a deep connection to the natural world. That sense of movement and intention is reflected in her work, which celebrates color, texture and the quiet power of beauty.

Born in Hoboken and raised in northern New Jersey, Chimento developed an early fascination with color and pattern. Her creative instincts led her to Parsons The New School in New York City, where she studied textile design beginning in 1977. While there, she designed prints for Scalamandre, the luxury fabric studio, an experience that confirmed her calling.

“I knew I was on the right path,” Chimento said.

As life shifted toward marriage and motherhood, creativity found new expression through gardening and home life. For Chimento, those years were no less artistic.

“That was my art for a long time,” she said.

In 2007, she returned to painting full time, launching a new chapter that included gallery exhibitions and commissioned work. Her style, influenced by nature and artists such as Helen Frankenthaler, emphasizes organic forms and layered color inspired by the sea, sky and garden.

“I want my work to reflect the feeling of the natural world,” she said. “Bringing that indoors creates a sense of calm and connection.”

Chimento views art as an investment in well-being, believing it plays a meaningful role in both personal and shared spaces. Whether in a home, office or healthcare setting, she sees art as something that enriches daily life.

“Art allows people to pause, reflect and feel grounded,” she said.

That philosophy guides her approach to commissions, which are rooted in collaboration and communication. Each piece begins with conversations about a client’s space, color palette and the emotion they hope the work will evoke. Sketches, progress updates and studio visits are all part of the process.

“The goal is always a personal connection,” Chimento said.

She is currently completing a commission of large-scale works for a lakefront home in New Jersey, a project inspired by the surrounding landscape. Outside the studio, her creativity is fueled by gardening, sky watching and time spent on Cape Cod, where the coastline continues to influence her work.

Her advice to artists and collectors alike is simple.

“Invest in what brings beauty and meaning into your life,” she said. “Art has the power to elevate everyday living.”
